Who gets the first 4 spots again?

Which sucks this year for us, because that 5th spot is a nice looking spot (on paper) to get to the semis.
The 5th spot is always going to be a great position to be in. You get to host the #12 seed and then play the 4th highest conference champ, which will never be the SEC or B1G, in all likelihood.

Yes. And they won’t be punished for their joke schedule either or that embarrassing loss to Northern Illinois
Say what you will, but they’ve done what they had to do after dropping that NIU game by destroying practically everyone they’ve played since then, and their loss was early enough that they simply had to keep on winning while waiting for teams above them to lose.

They also beat A&M at Kyle Field by more than Texas did.

No, the committee can take as many G5 conference champs as they want, the only thing that is required is that the highest ranked G5 champ is in the field regardless of where they’re ranked. So say a P4 champ has 3 losses, the committee can take a second G5 champ over them.
What was the point in making that G5 auto inclusion rule? We’ve seen a top 10 G5 school at least every other year. Some years there have been multiple G5 schools among the top 10.

You’ve got to love that Clemson gets beat yet still has a shot at the playoffs and a first round bye. They are 9-3 with 2 losses to SEC! WTH??
Very unlikely even if they manage to upset SMU.

As long as Oregon, Texas, Arizona State, and Boise State win their CGs, the best Clemson could do is likely the 12 seed. That would likely get them a 1st round road game at ND or Penn State.

Got it. But getting more that one G5 in the final 4 is always going to be a long shot. Next in line after Boise/UNLV would be Army/Memphis way down at 24/25 so it won’t happen this year.
It's actually Army and Tulane. Memphis beat Tulane bit their in conference results are worse.

Is it possible for the Big 12 champion to get left out if there are 2 G5 champs ranked higher?

In hindsight, maybe, but the truth is their schedule included 7 opponents who were either ranked in the preseason poll or ranked at the time of the game. Tennessee’s schedule includes only 4 teams that fit that bill.

It’s easy to trash any team’s schedule when you don’t do your research.

Reading the official rules of the playoff again and I’m confused. Isn’t it supposed to be the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, ACC and best group of 5 team? Do they select the best 4 conf winners of these 5? Prior to todays games, why was Boise State in the top 4? Is this because they are ranked higher the the Big 12 leader? Does the 5th best conference winner end up wherever their ranking is (not the 5th slot for the 5th best conference winner?). I guess after the top 4 conf winners are selected, it’s anything goes (or straight rankings) for 5-12 brackets? The best ND can ever do is 5th?
It's literally just the 5 highest ranked conference champs get an auto-bid. The 4 highest also get a bye and 1-4 seed.

Aka if Tulane won the AAC and ranked ahead of Clemson, the ACC winner, then Tulane would be given the 12th seed and Clemson would be out of the playoffs as the 6th highest ranked conference champion, ~top 15 team.

More reason to end the guaranteed byes and top-4 spot for top 4 conf champs.

Give them a spot, fine, but anything more is being shown to be very very silly.

We're putting teams WAY ahead of their ranking, and giving them byes, with this system. It's downright dumb.

You can't always expect Notre Dame to be competitive so I assume they won't be considered when finishing with 2 - 3 losses. That opens up another spot.........to Ole Miss types.

Yes. Fully.

Big 12 and ACC are both testing these grounds.
No way this year 2 group of 5 teams get a automatic bid. Tulane lost last week that killed the AAC chance. Both Big 12 teams playing for conference Championship are ranked higher than the AAC teams.

Didn’t realize that. I guess the odds of two (or more) G5s being ranked higher than one ( or more) of the P4s is very low though.

Not necessarily. If Tulane would not have choked against Memphis (and then also won the CCG this Saturday), there's a good chance Boise (at the 4 seed) and Tulane (as the 12) both would have gotten in. Tulane was already ahead of Iowa St and right behind Ariz St. An Iowa St win over Ariz St probably would have put Tulane in the field as the AAC champ would have been ranked ahead of the Big 12 champ for that fifth auto.
