Who has been the best athlete of 2015?

I'm not saying anything about golf. I don't understand why you're so hung up on it. It's light years different than sitting in a seat while turning a wheel

Example - I don't view a person competing in a rifle competition to be an athlete. Now if you change that to the biathlon then they are

You don't have to say anything about golf, I'm the one that brought it up. Just asked a simple question.

Most people would consider golf a sport. I'm saying there's not a lot of 'athletic' difference in playing golf and sitting in a car driving. Older people do both. Non-athletic people do both. All shapes and sizes.

You don't have to answer the question, only curious to hear other people's responses and reasonings.

As a race fan, I find this argument tiresome and fruitless.

The way I've always approached it:

There are NASCAR drivers who are athletes. You need not be an athlete to be a NASCAR driver.

There are pga tour golfers who are are athletes. You need not be an athlete to be a pga tour golfer.

That said, all modern F1 drivers are athletes. The rigors of that kind of racing demands it.

I can agree with all of this.

Think my rough definition is a sport/athlete is something that is 1) physically exerting, 2) strategy involved, and 3) competing against others.

Why would a driver ever be in the running? :eek:lol:

I'd go with Rousey since the dominance is ridiculous

I'm Serena for that reason, because women's MMA competition is bad. I know women's tennis isn't at its best right now, but it's still 10x deeper with talent than fighting.

Don't know why I am wasting my time with PJ here. As ever he is typically cocksure with his ignorance.

Anyway, for anyone who is interested in seeing the rigors of what a F1 driver deals with, here is a nice video:

Webster defines an athlete as someone trained in an exercise or sport that requires physical strength, agility, or stamina. By that definition yes they are athletes.

So is pretty much everyone in the world. Really narrows it down

Racing by itself does not require an athlete to perform the task (no matter how many videos nerd posts )

I honestly think the 4 I mentioned are neck and neck and neck and neck. Last night I was on the Pharoah bandwagon, but now I'm kinda thinking Serena. I've already gone through the Rousey stage of dominance. And Spieth is in 4th place today. Spieth arguably is arguably in the middle of the best non-Tiger golf season in a quarter century.

Did you even bother watching the video, which explains why F1 drivers must be athletes? Otherwise this conversation is useless seeing how you are unwilling to consider any viewpoint besides your own and are refusing sources.

It's actually irrelevant since you didn't name an F1 driver to your list

I'm not a race fan, but.... some of those guys have to work out and be athletic. That way they can fight when they wreck and bump each other! I love those highlights!

A race car driver can be considered an athlete in a broad sense, but there is no way I am ever voting them best athlete in the world for any given year. It's definitely a whole different category of sport. Seems absurd to try to compare. Golf is a gray area too, but the fact that there is such a huge talent pool and so competitive that it wins me over. NASCAR is basically white Americans who grew up driving. Small talent pool.

Best athlete of 2015 will be the person that gets to the top of Mt. Mudoriyama

We just need a "best competitor" category. Athlete can mean two entirely different things, the way we use it.

I agree race car drivers are not athletes -- it takes more skill to fly a 747 or steer a cruise ship than drive a car

Have you ever driven a racing car in competition?

I'm guessing the answer is no. The whole argument of "I've driven a car before and it's easy, and I'm not an athlete, so being an F1 driver is easy and they aren't athletes" is flawed. That's like saying, "I've played catch before and it's easy, so being an MLB pitcher must be easy."

I can't believe I've found my way back here. I'm such a glutton for punishment.
