The running game will not be so easy moving forward. SEC play is here. We will have to throw on more third downs to keep drives alive. Our opponents pass rush will be a lot stronger and receivers will have to get open. Who can make plays? Playmakers will get the targets. Nico will go through a maturation process the remaining games. He will make freshman mistakes. He will miss some reads. It’s the real world in the SEC.

As long as our defense keeps opponents out of the end zone, Nico will not have to win games while he grows. If our D can keep the pressure off the offense, it’s going to be fun this year. If our line can stay healthy and open holes for RBs, Nico has better looks and easier reads. If our O-Line does its job, Heuple can out scheme any D Coordinator in the country to get our WR and now TEs open down field.

The success of this season will be determined by who wins games for us? Is it the defense or will it lie in Nico’s arm and legs? Success from 1998 began with the D and allowed Tee to manage games rather than requiring him to ho win them! GO Big Orange!!!

Durn good Q. Gotta say it's a half dozen of one and six of the other right now as neither O or D has really been tested against formidable opponents.

I like a lot of what you said.

However, this idea of "either defense or offense will have to step up and win games for us," I think is just wrong.

They do it together. If the defense only allows 10 points, the offense has to get 11 points. If the offense gets 50 points, the defense only has to stop the other guy from getting more than 49.

Anywhere up and down that scale. They work it out together. Each side will have good days and bad days, we just don't want them both to have a bad day on the SAME day.

Heh.

Go Vols!

Both are solid and we have played so many guys, especially on defense, we are finally developing depth we haven’t seen in forever. We now have leadership all over the field. These guys know how to win. Most importantly, they know they can win. I really like the clean play without a lot of laundry bring thrown on the field. Omar-Lott got his usual personal foul Saturday, but otherwise it’s a well disciplined team. I hope we have good punt coverage, but we will have to wait and see.

Offense gets all the hype but good question I think defense will ultimately be key to pulling off big game wins. Nico runs too much they will come after him just like all the other Vol qbs that went down with injury.

I would say they both are about equally as good right now.

He needs to run a little bit smarter. Get the yards you need and get down quickly. Stay healthy young man.

I don't think the offense has played our best game yet. I think the D has been playing lights out. We have basically taken our starters out in the second quarter in 2 games and in the 4th quarter in one game and still held the teams to no TDs. Basically, our starting offense and Defense have played in 1 3/4 games so far this season.

Anyway, our DL and our RB group I think are tied as our best groups as both are performing at the top level of the NCAA. I am worried our DB's haven't' been tested, but I think that is partly because teams have to do quick throws and don't have time for the deeper throws.

Sampson just appears to be so much stronger this season. He runs with even more power than usual. He is a patient runner, but then explodes through the holes much lock Pacheco with KC Chiefs. He has the opportunity to be a special player. Keep him away from Delilah! He is holding the team up so far, along with a bunch of other Vols

On the drive the defense arguably looked most suspect so far this season, they scored a touchdown.

Right now it's the offense for me and particularly the OL and the running game. We have an amazing QB and he's not even the best part of our offense!

The next 3 games could make me change my mind. If our D continues to prevent scoring against OK, AR and UF then I will change my stance and say our D is the real hero of the year. They are just a bit (slightly) unproven so far mainly due to competition.

We're so untested it's just hard to say. We've played one team that even has a pulse. We did this one them;

Put up 117 more yards than they averaged against their other two opponents.
Held them to 298 yards fewer than they averaged against their other two opponents.

Now on it's face that obviously favors the defense but we all know our O left yards/points on the field if we'd wanted them. I maintain we don't REALLY know much of anything until we meet up against some genuine competition. That's 5 days out as I type this.

A common thread that I heard this weekend from television pundits is the premise that one tweak Josh wanted to make with this offense is to make it a more physical version of the same fundamental scheme. To that end, they cited Tennessee's recent focus on both quantity and quality at the tight end position in the transfer portal. The ability to frequently utilize two tight ends, even if one is lined up in the H-back position, factors into that equation. At the same time, some of the touchdown passes to the H-back, coming out of the backfield, have been embarrassingly easy.

Defense so far. They’ve allowed 3 pts so far this year. Generated multiple turnovers and a safety. No matter how good an offense is if you have that from your defense you’re going to win.

How many third down conversions has the defense allowed? Even with 4th string squad in late, D hadn’t given up much at all.

I think the reports were that the Defense got the best of the offense in both scrimmages. Now, Nico didnt play in the 2nd one. but 1s vs 1s, we couldnt run the ball on our defense.

In the 1998 Fall Camp, the swirling rumors were that the Offense was terrible. The could not go anything positive. Once the season began everyone realized the defense was one of the best ever and the Tee Martin led offense was pretty good as well. I just hope our defense continues to be so dominant. It really helps a young QB to know he can make a mistake and the Defense will have his back. It helps coach be more aggressive in play calling with a young QB

Bryant's old saying applies - Offense wins games, Defense wins championships
