Throw in Jim Donnan and you have the Holy Trinity of why Fulmer kept his job as long as he did.

There was a window of opportunity and both Spurrier and Fulmer jumped through it.

Don't you think Bear Bryant's flat-out dominance of the SEC throughout the 1970s was aided and abetted by the fact that Tennessee and Auburn were being coached by Bill Battle and Doug Barfield? If Tennessee had hired Johnny Majors in 1970 and Auburn had hired Pat Dye in 1976, things are a lot different.

Wholeheartedly agree. Great point.

When you looked at the special-Ed students coaching the SEC in the 90's, it's no wonder Fulmer and Spurrier had the success they did. It changed overnight for them both as the decade changed, and never got any easier.

Bryant, who admittedly was a great coach in his own right, enjoyed the same kind of competition for the majority of the 70's. It no doubt had the effect of inflating his impressive record.

Being the best coach is always a big advantage. It was also an advantage when Shug Jordan, Vince Dooley, Cholly Mac, Joe Paterno, Woody Hayes and a host of others, had to compete against coach Bryant during the 70's.

Coach Bryant was as successful on the national scene, as he was in the SEC. He averaged a national championship at Alabama at a rate of almost One every four years.

Still coaching: Spurrier, Petrino, Chip Kelly, Tommy Tubberville
Not coaching: Urban Meyer, Rich Rod, Mike Leach (he just looks like he smells like coffee)

8. Mack Brown
7. Butch Davis
6. Houston Nutt
5. Steve Spurrier
4. Chip Kelly
3.bobby Petrino
2. Joe Paterno
1. Brian Kelly

Joe Paterno is one of the most selfish coaches in the NCAA. His refusal to retire is destroying the football program he built.
