Who opts out of the bowl game ?

An exhibition game with as much or probably GREATER risk of injury than a bowl game with their team in the scheme they've been running all year.

You and others continue to operate under the notion that the purpose of College Football is ONLY to reach the NFL and that actually winning and losing as a team does not matter.

Man, this really isn't rocket science.

1. The. Season. Is. Over. UT won and lost as a team to a 10-2 record. They missed the playoff, so now the players who are going to enter the draft begin their preparations - yes, they thought of the team first all season, now allow them to think of their future.

2. The Senior Bowl is not an exhibition game, it is a chance to be worked out by pro coaches and meet with NFL personnel. It's a precursor to the combine. Either you're not listening, or you're just obtuse.

You know that as fact?

In the grand scheme, yep it is meaningless. But only needing 32 yards to break an all-time school record, that’s a pretty tough thing to pass up. He sure looked like he loved breaking that record with 5 TDs vs Bama.

You're going to compare 5 TD's in a generational win over Alabama, which was more about that game than anything else, with an obscure total yards no one knows about or cares about other than a half dozen VNers? Please stop.

I'm not for or against because it's not my decision to make. But, I will say players have been hurt during the season, in bowl games, during senior bowl practice and games and I tore my achilles unexpectedly within a few minutes of jogging. Point being you can't control your fate when it comes to injuries.

Heck why don’t you let Hyatt make the decision instead of attacking folks hoping he comes back. As far as your senior bowl evaluation, scouts watch them throughout the year. Schools even have their own pro days. To skip a NY 6 game and then go to a senior bowl is silly and just as dangerous. There is nothing in that one week is really going to change his status in a draft. That game is important for a lot of players for more exposure and evaluation for sure. Most that play in that game play because they want to improve their stock and another game does that. Most of these type players wouldn’t opt of of a bowl game to begin with. And the chances of getting hurt in them games is just as good as any other game. At the end of the day it’s their decision. There are many different takes even among players so there is no reason for you bashing somebody over hoping Hyatt or anybody else plays the bowl game. GBO

The hope of Hyatt playing a bowl game is more about what fans want than about what might be the right decision for Hyatt right now. Obviously he will decide, and we should respect whatever decision he makes. The Senior Bowl is a chance to be in front of NFL decision makers and work out for teams, so there is very good reason kids decide to go. I'm done, this has been beaten to death.

I can see it both ways. For UT, we haven’t been to a MEANINGFUL bowl game in quite some time, I wouldn’t anticipate many guys opting out. For some teams (ex: BAMA and Clemson), missing the playoffs is a disappointment and a NY6 bowl means nothing and they decide to sit. If I was still playing I would want one last game with my teammates

To be precise, we haven't been to the Orange Bowl since 1/2/1998 and haven't played in the Sugar Bowl since 1/1/1991. Unlike perennial playoff teams, I would expect both our team and fanbase to be extremely hungry to participate in either of these bowls.

i think it could depend on orange bowl vs cotton bowl. heard RUMORS that players are not as thrilled with possibility of playing in cotton instead of orange. AGAIN THATS JUST RUMOR THAT I'VE HEARD. really hope we get to see most of those guys for one more game though!

I believe Banks is a baller, I don’t see him sitting out. That’s just my opinion.
I think Banks plays. He needs all the help he can get to show someone that he can play at the next level. His off the field problems probably takes him off any draft boards. At best he probably signs a free agent contract.

If Hyatt opts out, then you know he is gone and not coming back....if he plays, most likely he is coming back.

And you base this on what?? I think you are just hoping to "wish" him back.. I has no reason to come back. To play in a bowl is good for his exposure and being the last thing seen of him in competition (real competition, not some "star" game). It has been said the last thing a person sees is the first thing they later remember.

Didn't BY accept an invitation to play in one of the All Star games?

Some call the bowls an "exhibition" game not worth playing. My question is, "how so" in any way that other games are not once you cannot win a championship? Why skip a meaningful bowl game with your team and play in an All Star game... which really is an exhibition game?
The Senior bowl game in and of itself is not that important. The practices for the game are swarming with NFL scouts and coaches. These opportunities are very important to guys trying to get a more favorable draft round.

Based on the risk/reward for someone who is a finalist for national awards and the risk of injury...

I am not "wishing" him back...I am saying that if someone plans to declare for the NFL draft, and they have as much positive hype around them as Hyatt has had this year, there is NO reason to play in the bowl game and risk injury...not a wish one way or another...just a statement to glean any insight into what his plans are next year based upon what he decides in the bowl game.

IMO, he has no reason to come back another year....his draft stock is great--and next year with a new QB could risk that.

Without Hooker at QB, I could see Hyatt opting out. The only reason to play would be if he plans to return next year then it will be valuable time to get in sync with Milton.

I don't buy playing in the bowl game just to get the receiving yards record. In all likelihood it's a record that would just be broken within a few years with CJH as coach.

Getting into a NY6 game for the 1st time in forever makes me hope that nobody sits out.

That's just me wanting to see all of them again even if it's for just 1 more game and hoping it gives us a better chance to get the Bowl WIN!

It really doesn't matter if they play or not or if they leave or stay and I have to say a huge THANK YOU to all of them for becoming a VFL!!!

Whatever they decide to do I certainly wish them all the very best for their futures!

VFL...GBO!!!

If your plan is to try for the NFL there is absolutely no good reason to play the bowl game. You can get your agent and begin serious prep for NFL draft and workouts for NFL people. That can start immediately.

My best guess is most or all of these guys want to play. I mean they're all very competative and they would rather be at the Sugar/Orange/Cotton bowl with their teammates than working on their 40 time with a track coach. So it probably comes down to who's in their ear. If mama says look to the future they ain't suiting up, but then again mama may say do what your heart tells you or this will be your last chance to go play with your bros, then they on the plane.
