Who was the last UT center/big man...

Reggie is likely our best big man of modern history. Hathaway was highly considered coming out of high school, but never did develop a great offensive game.

Reggie Johnson is probably the last big man we've had with a consistent offensive game.

Hamer was handicapped by having lousy help, but your point is well taken. Wood, Ellis, and Victor all had good offensive games, but weren't true centers.

I know Charles. He could have been great but was too lazy

He had heavy feet. I'm still not sure how he was rated so highly coming out of highschool.

Haislip could score.

DY-RON NIX!! No, just kidding. I called in to SportsTalk one day when Slay was here. There was a rumor that day that he might transfer. I told them he was our only true post option and they thought I was crazy. They told me (was it Hathaway then?) that the center we had was much better. This thread is very true and other than Slay I can't think of one and we know he was not a true center. I guess it's the footwork and I think that's why Hakeem "the dream" was so good. His footwork was off the charts. I wish we could get a good 6'10" guy that posted up like he wanted the ball every time down the court. I used to be envious of Patrick Patterson posting us up when he was at KY.

A Tom Boerwinkle story: In fall 1967, I was teaching high school in Atlanta and lived near the Georgia Tech campus. Tennessee came down to play them, and, being a UT grad, I went to the game. The Tech fans ridiculed Tom unmercifully - if nothing else because he was not exactly the most fleet of foot, nor the handsomest guy around. With Tech holding a one-point lead and a few seconds left, Tom gets fouled. Goes to the free throw line, the game in balance. Calmly sinks both free thows to give UT the win. End of ridicule by hostile fans.

I loved Howard Wood when I was a kid. One year we got run out of the tournament by UVA, and the next day the KNS ran a huge picture of Ralph Sampson rising up to shoot, with Wood helplessly waving and looking up at him with his chin basically lodged under Sampson's junk, and I was just heartbroken for two days. I kept the newspaper in my room just so I could seethe about it.

I don't think UTK has had a true quality center the entire time I've been alive. And I'm old.

Probably Steve Hamer. He was drafted by the Celtics but never worked out for him. Remember Dan Federman guys? Dyron Nix as well but he wasn't really a Center.

Ron Slay was a PF that had both an inside & outside game but again not a Center. I never understood why he didn't get a shot in the NBA.

Wood was solid, but Ellis did more post scoring for those teams because he could unload it quicker than everyone else.
