I know Charles. He could have been great but was too lazy

Hamer was handicapped by having lousy help, but your point is well taken. Wood, Ellis, and Victor all had good offensive games, but weren't true centers.
k:A Tom Boerwinkle story: In fall 1967, I was teaching high school in Atlanta and lived near the Georgia Tech campus. Tennessee came down to play them, and, being a UT grad, I went to the game. The Tech fans ridiculed Tom unmercifully - if nothing else because he was not exactly the most fleet of foot, nor the handsomest guy around. With Tech holding a one-point lead and a few seconds left, Tom gets fouled. Goes to the free throw line, the game in balance. Calmly sinks both free thows to give UT the win. End of ridicule by hostile fans.
Wood was solid, but Ellis did more post scoring for those teams because he could unload it quicker than everyone else.I loved Howard Wood when I was a kid. One year we got run out of the tournament by UVA, and the next day the KNS ran a huge picture of Ralph Sampson rising up to shoot, with Wood helplessly waving and looking up at him with his chin basically lodged under Sampson's junk, and I was just heartbroken for two days. I kept the newspaper in my room just so I could seethe about it.
I don't think UTK has had a true quality center the entire time I've been alive. And I'm old.
