USC is known as RB U, Marcus Allen had great vision and balance, O.J. was a great slasher, but UT has had it's share of good RB's too. Who's your favorite? I've always thought Charlie Garner was the best pure open field runner, but you've got to break the first five yards to get into the open field. Therefore my favorite back was T Henry. If it was third and three he could get you three tough yards better than anyone. If Jamal hadn't gotten hurt, and then worried more about not getting hurt again he would of been the best, and Webb could have too, but he was injured also. And who's the fastest? My vote is for Jay Graham, but Shawn Bryson might of been faster. Garner was very quick for the first five steps to the hole. I think Stewart was the most overrated.

I will probably get flamed for this but Jamal Lewis before the injury was hands down the best or at least going to be the best. His 2000+ yards (I think 2,095) for the Ravens a few seasons ago shows that he's finally gotten over the injury. Unfortunately, I'm too young to remember Chuck Webb and Reggie Cobb. I wish I could see videos of those guys. Henry, Garner, Graham........we've definitely had some good ones. We just need a burner who will stay a couple of years and put up the stats. Foster? Maybe Coker?

Although Jamal Lewis was the best overall back we probably ever had Travis Henry is my favorite. I was lucky enough to be in attendance in 1998 when we played Akansas. He was a BEAST in that game. After Clint Sterner fumbled the football late in the forth quarter he put that offence on his shoulders and took us to the Promised Land.

Even though he wasn't around for long . . .For my money, it was Chuck Webb.

Everyone on the board knows how I feel about Jamal Lewis. That said, Chuck Webb was easily the best running back in UT history.

My favorite to watch was probably Charlie Gardner. Loved that spin move of his.

Always wondered why more UT coaches didn't coach the other backs to use a spin move like he did. If UT would have had Gardner for 4 years he could have had some impressive stats. I think he was probably the fastest among all the top backs at UT. An underated RB, he had a good NFL career.

Yep, he spun around so much you could never really get a good look at his name. :victory:

I really enjoyed watchin Travis Stephens in that 2001 season where we should have went to the NC, I especially loved him in that Florida game at the end of the year.

I hate it when the topic of the 2001 Florida game comes up. I was in a wedding that night and literally only saw about 10 minutes of the 2nd quarter of that game. It's probably the only game from the last 20 years that I can't talk about in some detail. :banghead:

I agree, Lewis could have been the best but he lost his heart or saw the dollar signs. Cheese was my favorite too.

My fav is Jay Graham. He always seemed to come up with the big runs in the big games?
Except against Florida, against whom he always managed to have at least one back breaking fumble.

I liked Tony Thompson, Little Man Stewart, Jim Miller, Greg Amsler, Roland Poles, and Keith Davis, too.

Keith Davis . . . You're making me flashback to Chuck Coleman, William Howard, Sam "the Ram" Henderson, Jeff Powell, Pete Panuska and all the other nondescript running backs of the mid 80s.

He was a good freshman. Got hurt too much. Speaking of those players, remember the little defensive back, Victor Peppers?

Let me give you my top dozen:

Chuck Webb
Jamal Lewis
Jay Graham
Travis Henry
Charlie Garner
Johnnie Jones
James Stewart
Reggie Cobb
Haskel Stanback
Curt Watson
Tony Thompson
Travis Stphens
Stanley Morgan

(These I've seen play with my own eyes and I'm not taking anything away from the former greats like Majors and Lauricella etc.

Stanley Morgan

Now there's an athlete. He was before my time, at least college-wise, but I've heard stories of him moving from receiver to RB for the good of the team and then went back to WR in the NFL and had a good career.

He did. So did Richmond Flowers for one season for the benefit of the team. Don't think they would do that now.

I totally agree,If he had stayed healthy & been around for the long haul...there is no telling
what Chuck Webb would have done!

Funny thing, he had a knee injury my sources say , that he should have had a complete recovery and had a great career, but he dropped out of rehab and did not make the effort needed. Apparently, he was a free spirit.

IMO, UT began their climb to the top echelon of the college football elite that night game in the Rose Bowl against UCLA in 1989 when he and Cobb ran all over the bruins for a 24-6 win.
