Why are people mad at Heupel?

I have seen many people getting upset at Heupel for not firing his staff, but he has not had to. The defense has improved, so he has not had to fire anyone on that side of the ball. On the offensive side, we have regressed, but we had a QB last year that could not hit a mid-range ball and a Qb this year in his first year of playing and he rarely hit deep balls. This severely limits offensive playcalling and gives defensive an advantage because they do not have to worry about the deep ball, etc. Also, I am just going to say Heupel's achievements so far again.

Came into a 3-7 team with the entire team transferred out and scholarship limitations (that we still have)
Only UT coach to beat Saban and ended the 15-year streak against the former Heisman-winning QB.
Ended the streak vs Florida
Undefeated vs Florida and Bama at home
Two #1 rated Qb out of highschool in the last 3 classes.
Has had two top ten recruiting classes which is the best sense 2014 and 2015.
First TN coach to make playoffs
One loss at home in last 3 years.

I know we got blown out by OSU and are losing players in the transfer portal. But, I trust Heupel running the program

The only ones that need firing are ol coach, db coach, and possibly wr coach. The rest can stay (for now)

Nobody is mad at Heupel. But, we have to get better on offense. I think Elarbee and Pope need to step up. If not, Heupel needs to think about cutting them loose after next year.
Yeah. They have had excuses with Milton and a first year QB, but if they do bad next year, there is not an excuse unless we have a crazy amount of injuries.

I think you’re confusing being mad at with wanting him to take the next step. You can be critical of someone and not hate them, it’s called growth

22 started an avalanche of expectations and an assumed trajectory which we have not met so people are mad
Many forget we had a decimated roster and rebuilding that with scholarship reductions is a rough process. We don’t have room to miss on guys. With a full deck of cards, attrition is good, when we don’t have any spares to lose, it catches up.

Some just want to fire everybody and pray something magically fixes all our problems. I admit I do get frustrated with some of our issues. Our OL technique is so bad. We have issues with motion on defense. WRs don’t stack dbs and make QBs jobs difficult. But, this is cfb and these players are usually pretty flawed. The ones that just stick out

Good question. I have no idea. Wish I knew the answer. This is why we can’t have nice things

The OL has regressed over the last 2 years with experienced players. The DBs are suspect outside of McCoy, who is probably out now. It's more than just a QB. You could've had Hendon behind this OL and it would've been difficult for him. Then throw in our WRs were very lackluster on top of that.

We have not addressed our needs on the OL via the portal to the extent we need to and some of our position coaches have not proven they can develop the talent we have.

Exactly. We can be a an extremely dumb fan base or group of trolls.
Nico had zero time to do anything all year. No time for separation for the receivers to get open. They were a joke for a majority of the season. And besides heard there isn’t a recruit that we’ve recruited in heups 4 years of being here that’s done well at all. Hopefully with Sanders that changes. But I haven’t been impressed with our oline development over the entirety of the Heupel era.

I'm not suggesting fire the OL coach yet, but they didn't pass block for **** in 2024. Just the truth
Maybe the QB holds the ball too long? OL stats from 2022 & 2024 show the 2024 OL graded better than 2022. Those same stats showed the QB held the ball almost a second longer. A lot more goes into pass blocking than just the OLScreenshot_20250117_040409_YouTube.jpg

Look at OL stats before you make such a statement. This years OL graded better than 2022. Nico also held the ball for almost a second longer.
