Why are people mad at Heupel?

I'd have a few with them 😄. They all seem like down to earth guys but its the what separates them from everyone else as a coach competitor. I believe those guys Saban and Smart demand perfection out of everyone and everything in those programs and it shows. If the blade of grass is off they'll get onto the grounds keeper 😄 but there are people like that in every profession. Vols got Heupel so we just gotta hope he makes the best decisions for interest of the program. One thing that's been incredibly frustrating to watch is the lack of discipline and consistent execution and we know you ain't winning championships without those.
As to your last statement, that is an issue that needs to be shored up to take another step forward. I'm sure Heupel knows it. Reducing those mistakes is imperative to continue to move in the right direction. That would help tremendously, especially when there might be a talent gap with our competition

I agree

The bigger problem is, I don't hate him. At the same time, I have very little respect and a whole lot of doubt he has what it takes to deliver the Vols to the promised land. Like the best Militry Generals, the best football coaches are by a rule of thumb unlikeable people. Heupel lacks that win at all costs killer instinct needed to take the next step.

Ask yourself, Would you like to have a beer with Heupel?" You would probably answer, yes. Now ask yourself, Would I like to have a beer with Saban or Kirby Smart?"

For those who don't like equating football to a war game, then take it up with the ghost of Gen. Neyland.

Tennessee and Georgia in the CFP. Tennessee zero wins, Georgia zero wins. Georgia even lost to a team that didn't even belong in the CFP, according to some on here. I know Georgia didn't have their quarterback, always give them the benefit of the doubt. A real coach would have figured out a way to win that game. See how silly you can twist reality?

We were in the playoffs with a difficult draw. As to the results of the regular season, we were at least on par with Penn St and ND. Because of the ridiculous playoff format, we kind of got screwed with a couple of much lower ranked teams getting a much more favorable seeding than us. Regardless, we were in the hunt for the national championship all season. That's as much as we can ask in year 4 after a shat show. There's no reason to believe we won't continue to move forward

Heupel is a very likeable coach and also seems to be a high integrity coach. He has also accomplished some great things over the past 4 years. At the same time, there is nothing wrong with setting high expectations as fans.

We have used the same excuse for all post Fulmer coaches: poor coach, it’s not his fault, the previous coach left a dumpster fire. However, after 3-4, years, we started to question those coaches. No reason why we can’t at least start asking some questions about year 5. This next year will be 100% on CJH. No excuses about previous coaches. It’s his team, his players, his philosophy and his culture.

The offense seems to be broken whether it’s due to players, schemes, play calling, etc, it has been sub par for the past 2 years. Yes, I know our rushing yards is up there and our average scoring is decent, but the problem is that we aren’t scoring at the right place at the right time when we urgently need to score - namely against more talented teams.

The defense has certainly improved but we still struggle to get off the field and our secondary still gets burned. I also don’t see a lot of creative scheme adjustments.

I don’t dislike Heupel, but I think he also needs to be held accountable for the product he gets paid handsomely to bring to the table. Whether improvements needed justify coaching changes or not will be on CJH, but the honeymoon is over for year 5.

Serious question. What is the expectation? My hope, not expectation, is to get in the CFP. Lots of teams not in the CFP. Would you call Kiffin a bad coach?

Look at OL stats before you make such a statement. This years OL graded better than 2022. Nico also held the ball for almost a second longer.
Im willing to bet the OTs didn't grade better than Darnell Wright and Crawford/Mincey

Yes, we should have high expectations as fans, but must be realistic with those expectations.

It's all about execution and hopefully Heupel can coach Nico into a proficient game manager. Developing an understanding that guys are wide open on the opposite side of the field, or checking into a RPO run at times. Hopefully Heupel can get the Morse code out of him

The secondary was burned a FEW times against our best competition because we play island man with McCoy and Gibson on the outside. That being said, it was drastically improved from the previous season

What is your standard for Year 5 for the stupidly labeled "honeymoon is over" ?

Think for a second about what you just said.

“Anyone who feels uneasy about watching the Vols go a month without a first quarter point and getting blown out in the biggest game in years would only feel that way if they want Jeremy Pruitt back.”

Meanwhile you probably said fans would be unhappy with an undefeated national championship and wanted Butch back in defense of Pruitt when he lost to Georgia State.
Sarcasm my friend.

Nintendo generation thinking - you hit reset and should immediately beat everyone by 50 points. Anything less and you hit reset again.

So we break the school single season rushing record, but the OL coach was an issue......sounds very volnationish
That thought was going through my head as well. Seems rather silly 🤷‍♂️ …. Lost 3 games this season (two against playoff teams and one of those prob the favorite to win it all). I really don’t think any reasonable fan is hating Josh Heupel.

Don't have individual numbers, just the OL as a whole.View attachment 715345
2022:
Darnell Wright-71.0
Gerald Mincey-57.5
Jeremiah Crawford-47.6
Javontez Spraggins-52.6
Jerome Carvin- 55.1
Ollie Lane- 69.3 on 123 plays

2023:
Gerald Mincey-61.6
John Campbell Jr-59.5
Javontez Spraggins-67.9
Ollie Lane-55.6
Andrej Karic-59.0 on 247 plays
Cooper Mays-62.9

2024:
John Campbell Jr-48.3
Lance Heard-44.9
Javontez Spraggins-59.8
Andrej Karic-69.2
Cooper Mays- 68.9

So our best graded "5* OT" graded out marginally better than our 3rd best OT in 2022 who was little known out of JUCO. John Campbell Jr was much worse. Spraggins was much worse.

So basically the grade being better is because Mays improved and Karic was better than Carvin/Lane and we've had a drop-off everywhere else with mostly the same players and one that isn't living up to the potential.

He does need to expand his playbook though. Our entire offense is essentially a single RPO play with 4 options built in. Super predictable once you look at enough tape.

Not true, but there are fans like you who would blame the fans if we went 0-12.
I disagree. I have been there during the bad years as well. I want UT to be successful. However, with NIL and Portal, we see a massive talent shift. I like CJH and what he has done in a very short time. The biggest challenge is keeping the 2s and 3s who feel they have a better chance to make more money or improve their stock with another team. This is the new College Football dynamic. I am not blaming the fans; I believe some have unrealistic expectations of their team, not just UT fans.

Whether you like it or not, UT Fans have a good and bad reputation.

I feel like Tennessee is still haunted, at times, by the failures from 2009 - 2020. This is why I see communications from Danny White to build confidence in our program again like highlighting the playoff appearance.

I still think it impacts recruiting and perception of the program but our Administration and Coaching Staff seem to be invested in overcoming all of that and building us up as a program. I think this is helping and, despite our set backs, we have a positive future.

Nobody (no players, coaches, or admin people) who were around during that time are still here. I don't know why it would have any affect on them. The players currently committing to Tennessee probably don't even know how bad Tennessee was in, say, 2013. They do know we've been good the last few years. There is a hang up that this program has with UF in particular that is inexplicable.

If going 30-9 with 2 top 10 finishes over the last 3 years is being haunted by the past decade, then sign me up.

There is still this perception of Tennessee in general public that we are an up and coming program but we can't be Georgia, Ohio State, etc. We can't recruit like them and we are a tier below. A lot of that was still the 2009-2020 mess because people didn't think that back in the Fulmer Glory Days. Heck, Georgia's reputation, back then, was not that high. I still think it is there and you can see it in recruiting still with us still unable to land some of these major blue chips we are going after at times and then picking teams like Ohio State, Miami, LSU, or Georgia over Tennessee.

Nico had more time than Hendon did. He held the ball almostva second longer.
Is that a function of WRs not getting open like they did for Hooker, Hooker making better reads and decisions or something else? Likely a combo. I wouldn’t expect Nico in his first year starting to make decisions like ‘22 Hooker.

Ohio state fans and media wanted to fire Ryan Day like 3 weeks ago and now they are natty winners more than likely
What’s funny is if you ask an Ohio State fan would they rather beat Michigan or win the Natty they’d actually have to think about it. Of course, that’s mostly because they don’t understand the question.

It's funny how times have changed. People wanting coaches fired and sweeping staff changes. Heupel is building a solid prigram, the right way. People now have short-term memory I guess. Not that long ago we were a pretty bad football program and had been for several years. Hard to justified a bunch of firings after winning 10 games and making the playoffs. Not to mention two top 10 finishes in three years. This program hasn't seen that kind of winning in over 20 years. People should relax and appreciate where we are and also where we've been.
