How about coach of the year in his conference 3 out of 4 years.... (Big 12 and SEC)
He's a pretty good coach.....
mm
It's about context. Look where UTEP and A&M were when he got there in comparison to their standing when he left. Also, there's a pretty good chance he'll be adding some hardware to UK's trophy case in two months.
Ah, I see. Conference championships are meaningless, yet the opinion of the beat writers in Lubbock and Auburn are important. I believe I am beginning to see where you are coming from.
I don't like the guy, but I'll admit that is based on personal feelings more than an evalutaion of his basketball prowess. I simply find it premature to stick the "elite" label on him based on what he has accomplished.
Seriously? The guy has taken every program he's been at from bad to top of it's level in a couple of years. How is that not a clear sign of a great coach???
IF BCG has been at a school for 6 years or so and not won a few conf championships, hit a final four or two and been competing for NCAA titles, then I'll start to think maybe it's smoke and mirrors.....

I assume, then, that your opinion of Pearl would be even higher.
I do have a high opinion of Pearl. Said so many times.
I wouldn't trade him for BCG, but I like him as a college coach.
Most of college basketball is recruiting and Pearl is good at that..... I just think he's too much of a player's coach..... doesn't demand enough from his talent. Hard to win big games and go far in tournaments if you don't demand a lot from your players....even if that means you break a few eggs.....show me a team that never has any transfers and I'll show you a coach who isn't pushing hard enough.

Hmmm...do Duke and Ramar count? j/k
The problem with hanging the "great" label on someone who hasn't really won anything yet is that it puts him in pretty rarified air--guys with final fours and national titles and...gasp...conference championships. That title belongs on Pitino and K and Roy and Izzo and Howland, and I think that is a club that Gillispie hasn't joined.
Guys,
The only way to get a team to play D is to sit them when they won't......
UK fans were complaining LOUD as hell early in the season when some players were sitting even though they were more talented....... Now, those seated players are busting ass for UK on D.
Forbes can teach INCREDIBLE D, but Pearl is the one who controls how hard they play it by demanding they play it.
