because the position coach is bad at his job and the offense isn't generating opportunities for receivers.
We have clearly seen a drop off at the development of new receivers. I have been biting my tongue on this all year. I dare say we may be eyeing the same at running back, OL, and whatever impact Golesh had on the offense. Sampson was not a product of Sims IMO. He already has Mack’s fingerprint on him, and he was his own man by 2024.
This is where newer coaches often nose dive. Heupel is 10x the coach Butch Jones was, but I’m not sure the collective is as good at recruiting. Still, Butch’s black book was either full of people who didn’t want to coach for him, or it simply wasn’t as full as he made it seem. It didn’t help him that the AD wouldn’t spend on a good strength & conditioning coach when we lost our guy.
Heupel hasn’t made silly comments about his extensive network, but he seems to promote from within a bit. I liked the Inge hire, and he had some solid guys to begin with, so he seems to be able to make good hires. I just think he has missed in some areas.
I can’t help but wonder if Heupel has a loyalty complex after being burned at Oklahoma. I like that he has held his staff together in order to maintain continuity, but if we have another year at OL like we did the last two years (the last being the worst yet), he has GOT to make a change there. Same goes for WR. Our defense got toasted as well against OSU. We still have to continue to get better there, which we have at every position, every year since that staff has been on board.
I will say this, we are going to be mostly sophomores and juniors next year with mega loss along both lines. I don’t expect next year to be a great year. Georgia will probably still beat us at home, and we have Bama and Georgia away. Bama will be in its second year under their new coach, and on a mission after not making it to the playoffs. Florida found their QB and looked much better toward the end of the season while barely losing to us in Neyland.
I have to say that I have more expectations for 2026 than I do for next year. We will be stacked if we don’t lose too many guys in 2026. This includes our DBs, RBs, DL, OL, WB, RB, WR, TE and even our punter and Turbyville. They will both be RS seniors who have already made a big difference. It will be big if they stay.
Heupel has surprised me two years out of his first four, however. So, the above are simply concerns I have had throughout the year. I can see him bringing back all that young talent next year, pulling in some transfers and surprising me once again next year. Those are the type of surprises I enjoy.
