you really think GM would come smoking to the fore with a car that got that kind of mileage as they go broke? That's just insane.I do however blame some of this problem on the car manufactures. Just think if they had a engine that was efficient enough to get 50-60 miles a gallon. You know they can do it, but will they??

all I'm saying is that they could really create the vehicle that could get 50-60 miles per gallon and were palatable to our market, as you suggest they can, then they would be doing it today without a doubt. It maybe insane, but if you notice all but a few of the car companies are downsizing the SUV and truck fleet to make room for smaller vehicles that get more miles to the gallon and that aren't hybrid.

Not when they can make a killing on SUV's and Big Trucks. There was a market for that, but now gas prices have all but shut it down. People want MPG now and they want their space. It's going to be difficult, but it has to be done. The Japanese and other car manufactures found this out a lot sooner than GM or Ford which leads me to believe that both companies need to fire their WHOLE R&D and Marketing departments and start over.
Don't you think they could charge even more for a 50-60 mpg car if people believe gas prices are going to stay up?
I would say that people are willing to pay for a vehicle that gets 50-60 per gallon right now versus one that gets 15-20. If I had the money, I know I would own a car that got at least 40 on the highway instead of my 22 MPG from my S10.
As far as charging, they raped people on SUV's so why not MPG's??
If the technology were there...and there wasn't some massive conspiracy going on with the oil companies...I would have to think that they would push this sort of technology as fast as they could and charge you for every bit of it...transferring some of the profits from the oil companies to their own pockets. But, they aren't...probably because they can't.
Nissan and Toyota have. Ford and GM are dinosaurs and may become extinct if they aren't careful.
OK...you're driving at another aspect that is certainly true...American automakers made a major strategic gaffe in long-term planning by completely abandoning almost all R&D on attractive low MPG options for the gas-hungry SUV.
That does not make any sense. 1+ years is not short term?
Here's an article that show just how addicted Saudi Arabia is to us. Looks like it's both ways...
Saudi Arabian Exports & Imports: Oil Exports Represent over 98% of Saudi Shipments to USA
Also, if Canada and Mexico were to get pissed at us we would be in REAL trouble.
