Why do head coaches leave their jobs?

Some leave because of a bigger challenge - See Chip Kelley

Some leave for personal reasons - See Oscar Meyer, who left UF becasue he took it personal that he started getting his arse whooped in the SEC

Some leave because they know they can make a difference, and it is the best logical step for their career - See CBJ for example.

Some leave because of ego - See Lane Kiffin

Some leave just for the money - See Derick Dooley's move from LA Tech

Some leave because they get fired, and make a bunch of money doing it - See Dooley's move from UT

Do u really think Dooley left la tech for the money?? I know I get bashed for being a pro-Dooley guy but saying things like that is just foolish. He was getting pd 1.8-1.9 a yr. the lower tier in the sec at UT! The 5 mil was to make it a hard pill to swallow if he wasn't given enough time which he wasn't so that 5 mil is on UTs shoulder.

It's more logical to say Dooley left for UT because that was his dream job and may not have seen that level of opportunity for a long time. And the challenge as well. Money for a guy like him isn't a main priority. Creating a legacy at one of the top historical programs in the conferance he grew up so intimately in IMO would be more of a driving force than money.

CBJ leaving to make a difference and UT being his dream job?? Give me a break. I pray he succeeds but you've missed how he shopped himself around. Was going to CO (which would have been his dream job) but then Ut became his "dream job".

You do realize that there were tid-bits of sarcasm in my post, don't you? You hopefully realize that not everything there was to be taken absolutely serious, don't you?

The two I was absolutely serious about were CCK and CBJ. The others were not really meant to be taken that seriously. I know CDD had the best of intentions when he came here. NO coach goes to a scholl for the purpose of failing and getting fired.

I believe CBJ told CO no before being offered the UT job. Is that not correct? In fact, he was offered two jobs that he said no to before UT came asking. Then how was either of the others his dream job? What makes you think he didn't believe he could make a difference in this program? do you honestly think He would come here thinking he couldn't restore this program back to a competitive level?

Wow, you need to lighten up a bit, or go wallow in pity over Dooley until you get over it.

Where to begin with this nonsense? On the one hand you question Coach Jones' statement that UT is his dream job, while at the same time that it was most likely Dooley's dream job, which he never said.

Because the state police found you bloody and mangled in a brush heap beside your equally mangled Harley with a tall blonde on her cell phone 5 feet away?

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were specifically talking about a certain lying, cheating, classless, womanizing, job-jumping ......

With all the changes in cfb and bb I find it interesting. Why do these people leave when they have pretty good jobs?

Bigger challenge, more pay, various reasons, but I believe that the expectations within a short timeframe are becoming overwhelming and a trend is starting, i.e., Chaka Smart, for one. More than one college wants him: what does he do? Stay at his school. How much is security and happiness worth?

This question triggered a memory from the early days of CDD's staff introductions, I think it was from Sal. The clip I recall was a response by the coach during the interview....."I don't know why I'm here really".

Does anyone recall this and who said it....for some reason I think it was Sal. And took it to mean this guy is just being humble. But maybe he was just being honest.

IMO money is rarely the biggest reason a coach takes another job. The biggest reason is moving up the ladder more times than not. Coaches are competitors and want to prove themselves on bigger stages.

In my opinion as long as there isn't A true playoff in college football coaches will do whatever it takes to coach in A BCS conference! In basketball U can stay at A smaller school with job security. The reason is there's A playoff and U have A chance to play for A national title!
