have such low expectations of Tennessee basketball?

As long as Pearl is consistently making it to the NCAA and in the hunt for the east championship (not actually having to win the east every single year) then I am happy.

I'm serious,I just don't see anyone better than Bruce Pearl coming here to coach.

If not for CBP I wouldn't even be watching the VOLS BB Team ! I don't know anything about BB, but I do know this- Before BP arrived I knew of Allen Houston, and Dale Ellis, that's it ! I think it would be hard to find another BB or FB Coach to come here at all, with all the cry baby BS the VOLS fans dish out !
Where are the threads on the Track Team ? Their pretty good too. Let's start bashing those Coaches too ! Let's not forget that our AD is over all of these sports, let's fire him too ! While were at it let's give CPS resume a once over...........idiots !
Talk about something other than firing the coaches or we might never get another decient one for 20 yrs !

Exactly!!!

i can see the errors of his coaching philosophy but we wont get a better coach.... just a different coach.

This thread is embarrassing. Bruce Pearl has us consistantly in the Top 20, when we used to only dream of it.
not last year.

Do you not remember vol basketball before Bruce Pearl? We were the laughing stock of college basketball. Give me a break.

because decades of mediocrity calls for realistic expectations, not magical championship runs. Improvement is better than most programs are getting, much less wins and conference titles in the same conference as UK and UF. I don't think SEC championships, yearly NCAA appearances, and overwhelming winning percentages against conference rivals are "low" expectations, or accomplishments.

Basketball will always be second to football at Tennessee, that's just the way it is.
This. Plus suffering through the last 20 years have honestly made me ok with mediocrity. Plus if we fire Pearl right now, who wants a job where you can win the SEC, the east twice, and go to the NCAA tourney 4 straight years and get fired. A coach isnt going to take a job he thinks he'll get fired in. We are not prestigous. I hate to break this to you. Tennessee basketball is not Tennessee football. Pearl has not done a good job this year but until I'm willing to give him a few more years after what we've been through the last two decades.

So in other words it's ludicrous for me to want a football team consistently ranked in the top 10 contending for national titles AND a basketball team that does the same?

I can't want my expectations for a bball team to be to the point where a making the sweet 16 is expectation and not the fartherest point we get?

I can't believe there are fans who would settle than anything else than a program competing for national titles.

This. Plus suffering through the last 20 years have made me happy we mediocrity.... .

That is a cop out. Florida could say the same. It didn't stop them from hanging a couple of NC banners.

My answer is I don't have the first d@mn clue. Maybe Pearl is an easy target and likes to tan in the morning. And maybe he didn't have any friends on Volnation. I'm an educated man, but I'm afraid I can't speak intelligently about the halfcourt coaching habits of Bruce Pearl. What I do know is that he was set to make an appearance in the Elite 8 in recent years. Now, are these the questions I was really called here to answer? Second round dismissals and tanning beds? Please tell me that you have something more, VolKid. These several threads are on the main board still. Please tell me their orginal poster hasn't pinned his hopes, to find a solution to becoming a top program, on starting threads like this one.

That may be true, but why should we just be satisfied with only making the tournament? Florida is a "football school" too, and look at what they did.

Until the two NC years Florida had only made it past the 2nd round of the NCAA twice and have spent the last two in the NIT. Florida has done well but look at all the other football schools in the SEC: Bama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, all have had years here and there but been mediocre at best. People have an image of Tennessee and that is that Tennessee is a football school and that won't change anytime soon. Florida is even still seen as a football school despite what they've done on the court. Billy Donovan is maybe the only exception and even he has been very average other than his NC years because its very very hard to consistently be good at both major sports. I'm sorry but we'll never be a basketball school. I've been a season ticket holder since TBA was built and my family had gone to games even before that. I love UT basketball as much as a I do UT football but I have realistic expectations for the program.

Your university of Tennessee obviously has a different image of itself, than its fans. (at least fans such as yourself).

They are busy trying to upgrade to elite facilities, and currently paying an upper tier salary for a coach whom they obviously have high expectations for.

If your university threw in the towel and admitted that mediocrity was their target, then fans who strive for it could be happy. But its obvious they want something more, as do a large percentage of your fan base. (Who are coincidentally labeled Pearl Bashers and Haters, for their expectations.)

As for Florida, the Gators being great at football has not hindered Donovan one bit. He is still able to recruit at the top of the food chain, and he has. Its mostly his ability as a coach (and a few bad apples, that HE picked) that has failed the last two years.

It has nothing to do with Gator Football. Thats garbage.

Wrong. They went to the Sweet 16 or further in '87, '94, '99, and 2000. The tournament expanded to 64 teams in '85.

Personally, I like basketball more than football and have followed UT basketball more than football my whole life. Don't get me wrong, I love my football..it's just basketball is more exciting to me and better to watch. I have high expectations for Tennessee hoops. I like the great improvement we've seen and want to see us go to the next level. I also think it's BS that we are only considered a football school. Look at other programs (Florida, Texas etc) that have had success in both. I hope we can be considered a threat year in and year out in both sports some day.
