Why do we care so much?

Why do we care so much about watching kids who are sometimes decades younger than us playing football? my girlfriend once asked me this, and I told her if you don't get it, you don't get it. but now I am starting to wonder. Tradition, pulling for alma mater, the spirit of competition are plausible answers, but why do we put our hearts and souls on the line for this? Im not changing my stance by any means... just thinking existentially

Dude!!!

You wanted us to lose to Mizoo, and made a thread cheering about it.

To put it broadly, we care because we don't know anything else. We care because there was a great importance (at least for most of us) placed upon sports from a very early age.

I think it represents just a matter of civic pride as well. For me, when I see Tennessee play, it represents not only the university, but the entire state as well.

wrong. I didnt want us to lose to mizzou. Infact, I cant remember the last time I was so pissed after a loss. the post-game media frenzy made it incredibly obvious that that loss was far and away more valuable to the program and to the players than any 4ot win against mizzou could possibly be. The entire state wanted dooleys head, and we still carry on that tradition to this day. its called "the big picture". If it really feels that much better to just try and out-fan someone on an anonymous forum, feel free to stick to thay tactic...it aint gone work foo. Keep in mind...you get to sit back and reap the benefits of that loss without even having to acknowledge it.

If i could understand why these games, these kids, this university drives me to such emotional extremes, I probably would not let them do that to me. I no longer try to understand why I love this silly game, this silly university and all its silly football traditions so much. I just embrace it, get thru the rough times and hope like hell i dont have a massive coronary watching garbage like we saw out there today. God Bless VOLS football and if you're reading this post lord, please make the bad man go away....and make him take his orange pants with him!.......and his little orange dog too( in my best wicked witch of the west voice)

I grew up watching the Vols play, had 2 uncles and a cousin who were alumni.
I like the competitive spirit of the college game. Never gets boring, always upsets and new players about every year, they don't get "paid", (most) players have a lot of heart, it's amazing for me to see the players put in work and go to school at the same time(well they're supposed to)
It was a dream of mine to play for UT , but I didnot posess the talent nor heart , or size (at the time of HS graduation) but now I'm 6' 240, I would've made a decent TE or DE, or maybe a linebacker. I played in HS so I love the game , strategy, effort needed, and again competitiveness.

I hate UF and BAMA along with Vandy.
I love our VOLS!
