Virginia has tons of talent and is on the border with us. we could pluck talent from that state but it seems like we hardly do... take justin hunter for example. he was commited to LSU bc tenn was not hunting him...but when dooley gets in he shows him the slightest bit of love and he plops in our lap....maybe having a UVA alum might help us recruit VA and make that state be in the back of his mind... your thoughts????

Its been said that Hunter had switched his commit to UT but was a Kiffin silent. From what I gather, Dooley encouraged him to come on out with it.

Its just hearsay, though...I'm not sure there is anything concrete to this.

where do you think the team that took us to the woodshed in the bowl game last season gets about 60 % or more of their players from? of course it's virginia. va tech shows how much talent their is in the state. the tidewater area is a hotbed of talent !! i agree we need to hit this state very hard this year for great talent !!! the state produces a great deal more players than tennessee does. i really believe ccd will watch for more players from va. :lolabove:

Considering our new coach played ball in Virginia, I'm sure he will keep his eyes open...Justin Hunter.

Guys, after living up here for seven years, I am absolutely amazed at he level of talent in just what they call Hampton Roads area Suffolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hamton, and Virginia Beach. I know you don't want to be reminded of this but, Percy Harvin was number one recruit out of Landstown High in Virginia Beach. There are so many from this area in MLB I can't even name them all. I was wondering why we haven't reruited more from here. I live so close to Ocean Lakes I can sit out on my back deck and listen to he game. I hope we come back up here soon. GBO!!!

Are you using "Virginia" as a euphemism or are you serious? If you're using it as a euphemism, hell yea! Let's get all the "Virginia" we can!

We have had a few players from there over the years.....I wouldn't mind seeing us making a harder push up there, there is a lot of talent

Hampton roads as a group would be in the 10 largest cities in America.

I love VA players and it was a reason I always hated slade that he got so few of those studs.

we do recruit virginia. yes they have some talent but i wouldn't say it's off the charts. uva and va tech rosters are full of mid-range talent.

Hampton is like 7-8 hours away. I wonder if Dooley will still recruit it hard even though it's outside our 5-hour "region."

The Hunter switch to Tennessee was in the works weeks before the whole coaching change took place. It had as much to do with the location/track and field combo than anything else. LSU was just too far away from his family and he wanted a solid track and field program that was closer to home.

And I agree that Virginia should absolutely be prioritized by the staff. Ridiculous talent in that state. I'm not sure if there is any one guy on staff that has strong ties to the state though. As much as I thought Fulmer had lost his touch he did make a smart hire from a recruiting standpoint when he brought in Latrell Scott. Too bad he wasn't much of an actual position coach though.

That's pretty accurate. The Hampton Roads area is always referenced for talent but that is because of a few absolute freaks throughout the years and some fairly solid talent after that. There seem to be a couple of guys from here every year that make some noise but its not like there are teams with handfulls of D1 level talent.

Why would you compare a metropolitan area to a city? The metropolitan area of Greenville, SC has 640,000 and the city of Atlanta has 550,000. So Greenville is bigger than Atlanta?

Hampton Roads is the 36th largest metropolitan area in the country
Table of United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1 New York New York 8,391,881
2 Los Angeles California 3,831,868
3 Chicago Illinois 2,851,268
4 Houston Texas 2,257,926

Those are the only cities in America that are larger than metro Hampton Roads.

The point was that Hampton Roads has a large population, and I would say 1.6 million is large. Virginia Beach, Norfolk etc do not seem that large, but the population of that area is almost 3 times larger than metro Knoxville. It will not be surprising after the new census if it is more like 4 times larger now.

Sorry if you struggle with reading comprehension.

I said "A (metro Hampton Roads) is B (equivalent to top 10 in city population in the U.S.)"

and you took from that a statement that Greeneville is bigger than Atlanta...

I think the people saying we have always recruited VA were not following recruiting that closely during the Fulmer era. Slade was supposed to be getting guys and we missed over and over again...Al Groh convinced NFL talent to come waste away at a school that never competes.

My point was that it's deceptive to compare a metro area to a city.

The Buffalo, NY metro area is also a top 10 city
The Raleigh, NC metro area is also a top 10 city
The Birmingham, AL metro area is also a top 10 city
The Richmond, VA metro area is also a top 10 city
The Louisville, KY metro area is also a top 10 city
The Memphis, TN metro area is also a top 10 city
The Jacksonville, FL metro area is also a top 10 city
The Nashville, TN metro area is also a top 10 city
The Indianapolis, IN metro area is also a top 10 city
The Charlotte, NC metro area is also a top 10 city
The Orlando, FL metro area is also a top 10 city
The Kansas City, MO metro area is also a top 10 city
The Providence, RI metro area is also a top 10 city
The Oklahoma City, OK metro area is also a top 10 city

But I think we agree that the Va Beach area is one of the more populated areas within a 8-9 hour radius of Knoxville, has a ton of D-1 talent, and should be recruited.

We have never recruited SW VA much. We should have had Thomas and Julius Jones. Knoxville was closer than Charlottesville and South Bend.

Sorry was not trying to deceive. Maybe most people here have never been to Virginia Beach and so did not suffer from the misconception that it was more like Pigeon Forge size wise than Orlando FL metro.

Are you serious? Not everyone in this area goes to VT. I refer you to the list in post 23. Just a few make a noise? There 2 1/2 million people in the Hampton Roads or Southside area. Again take a look at the list, more then just a few freaks. Michael Vick had a home in Suffolk, that's where he got caught in the dog fighting thing.
