Aside from Jimmy Johnson, I can't really think of any college coaches that went on to great NFL careers.

Wasn't Chavis offered the LB's coach job with the Indianapolis Colts sometime in the late 90's, like 98 or 99?

Yeah, I remember that too. I think his kids were in high school at that point and he didn't want to uproot the family.

Some great cordinators just arent the head coaching type. Being a head coach is more of a motivational and management job, and some are pure technique and X's and O's guys that dont transfer as well over to being a HC

Two reasons

1. His defense can't stop big plays on third down
2. His secondary can't tackle (they all want to lay wood with the shoulder, but don't wrap up)..

I'm with Vol in AR. Our teams under Chavis have given up more 3rd and long conversions than any other I have seen. We have rarely been aggressive (though aggressive D is what we're built for) on 3rd downs and it has bitten us in the rear in some of our biggest games.

Because some people aren't meant to be head coaches, and after this year with the talent we had and have alot of people are frowning on him and I am one.

Well considering he lost an all-american DT and probably one of the more underrated DB's really hurt. He wasnt working with much at LB besides Mayo. Marvin Mitchell is average at best and Ryan Karl played above his head. KArl isnt that athletically gifted and doesnt have the LB speed we have seen at UT in the past like Wilson, Thompson and Westmoreland. The DB's I thought played solid all year except the LSU game and the 4th quarter against Florida. The D-Line should be solid next year. McCoy will be a stud, I think LamArcus Thompson and Dorian Davis are sleepers out of last years class, Mayo may be the best LB in the SEC next season. I thought Chavis did more with less this year. Look what he was given last year and what he did. Look at who he had to replace and what he had to replace those with. I give him credit. Not the best D we have seen in Knoxville but kept us in some games this year and made plays late in games (Air Force, Kentucky, Alabama) with their backs to the wall. Especially AF and Kentucky. Weve seen what he can do with talent. Next year we should eb solid, not dominant but solid.

Chavis's name comes up all the time. He called Bush a devil a while back and he is suppose to win reelection this year.

The reason Chavis' name doesn't come up for HC jobs is because no has wanted him to be their HC. It's pretty simple.

Thanks for enlightening us... :p

...I'm just pointing out the obvious. It looked like a lot of reasons were being put forth trying to explain it away...when it just comes down to the fact that no one wants him -- no demand.
