The answer is multifold:
1. We have NO threat from the outside. When Chism popping 3s is all we have, that takes him away from under the basket from O rebounds and easy put-backs. The lack of outside threats allows the defense to strangle our only realistic options inside.
2. We do not play defense with the same intensity that have marked the last few UT squads. Maybe it's youth, maybe it's a few heads that are too large for their respective games, maybe it's coaching. . . .I don't have the answer here, but I have seen us get killed from the perimeter for much of the year.
3. Our pressure doesn't seem to be working. Possibly, see #2.
4. Pearl's system is not an "Xs and Os"-rich style. When we get in the halfcourt offense, we really seem to have very little idea what to do. The lights-out shooting of Lofton and J Smith was able to hide that weakness for the past few years, now. . . .see #1.
5. (And this might be debatable) I don't think we fly under anyone's radar anymore. Our opponents know what we do and what we can't do, and we aren't able to surprise people with our pressure and running. See "Xs and Os" for the solution.
In short, we are stuck in the predicament of a style that requires 40 minutes of strangle-hold defense and an offense that demands threats from the outside, and we have neither.
