Why Gruden?

Yep, because only a moron AD would not have a strict buyout clause for a guy like Gruden. If he did come, I wouldnt expect him to stay more than 4-5 years max. But we got burned to bad on the Kiffin deal to fall for that one again.

Thats exactly why I dont want Gruden. If an NFL team wanted him bad enough a buyout wouldnt matter no matter how high it is!

Of the top-50 possible college head coaches in the entire country, he is the only one with a UTK connection.

The Fulmer and Majors trees failed us badly.

But it just takes one!

and what happens when the "strict buyout clause" is too much for Grud and says no. Its a no win for Hart - if he caves in then Grud bolts, he's an idiot (see MH). If he doesnt budge and Grud says no to being too high, the fans see him as an idiot.

Hart is smart enough not to put him in that situation. One thing for sure is Hart isnt going to let the inmates run the asylum like Hamilton did. He wont bend to the whines everytime a fan cries the coach sucks.

Why is anyone worried that Gruden will go to the NFL down the road? As I understand it he likely has his choice of at least either the Browns or the Eagles right now.

And so what if he does bolt after 4 years - which I would hope not - but lets say he does. The big selling point with me is that right now at this time we need our program to be able to compete with the very very best on the recruiting trail. We need that now. I guess I could be wrong but right now I think he becomes a magnet for recruiting in the short term at least and we get some talent such that CP type play makers fill our roster on both sides of the ball.

I think we can worry about 4 years from now....4 years from now.

That is what I have thought throughout this whole process about him, you just summed it up for me..

Everyone wanted Lane Kiffin then look at the mess he left Ut in after just one year. Kiffin said he wouldnt leave but then a better job (at least to him) come along and he was gone.

Dunno who this everyone is you're talking about. I don't know of anyone who wanted him. I sure as hell didn't.

other than winning a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy's players, why do so many people think Gruden is such a spectacular coach?

I know that success in the NFL is no guarantee of success in the college game, and vice-versa, however, there is a pretty strong track record of successful college coaches staying successful wherever they move within the college ranks.

Saban's buyout at Alabama is ZERO! He can leave whenever he wants!

This question gets asked daily... do some research.

Name me some other coaches that had a hand in getting 2 teams to the Super Bowl in the same year. Gruden took the Raiders to the AFC championship game in 2000 and lost to the Super Bowl winning Ravens. Lost in the game in 2001 to the Pats on the famous "tuck rule". Next year he took the Bucs to the Super Bowl and beat his Raiders team.

May be the reason the Browns contingency stuff(if true) is included, he loses a lot of money if he bolts early.

For all those out there on the 'Grudenwagon', why him? I get the superbowl win, but career he's just about 15 wins above .500. Tony Dungy has a superbowl win too. Honest question. I'm not hating on Gruden. He's tanned and jacked, but maybe there's something esle I'm not seeing. Fire away.

Recruits love him. I don't really blame him for the barn fire after the Super Bowl. He didn't really have a playoff caliber QB on the roster for the rest of his stay.

They want him because it's instant success. The last person we hired from TB that is a HOF coach turned out to be able to translate that success to here and USC. Oh wait..... If you think Monte's defensive system is complicated, it would blow your mind to know Gruden's. The name sells, but none of you have any clue if he can translate his vast knowledge to 18-22 year olds. Monte sure hasn't been able to.

15 over 500 is good in the NFL. He would be a rock star at Tennessee. He would recruit like Saban, by selling the NFL.

so you believe that a guy that hasnt recruited in 21 years and never been and cfb HC can "recruit like Saban", because he walked into a job and won a SB then went sub .500 til he was fired? Really?

you're one of those that assumes NFL success will equal college success

hate to be the bearer of bad news, skippy, but it rarely works out that way

But but he's only a few games over 500, and was not successful in the NFL! That means he will be good in college. Right?
