If they are good enough, they will win the starting job.We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a true freshmen that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a 5* coming in the next class. What's the point of recruiting them if you're scared to play them? Why recruit someone from the portal with the intention of starting them? What signal does that send to those guys? Merklinger is exactly where Nico was coming into the fall except for the bowl game start. McIntire wouldn't be the first true freshmen to start at QB for us. I know that we would prefer to put a proven product on the field but just because some guy knocked it out of the park playing for Northeast Western State for the Infirmed doesn't mean that will translate to the SEC any more than a RS Freshman with a year under his belt practicing with the team. If we pick up someone cheap, sure. Why not add depth? But we shouldn't be out trying to recruit a replacement for Nico with the intent to spend that money. Take the money Nico would have got and get some solid portal players to bolster the team as a whole. We are going to be run heavy again this year. Sure. Pick up a spare QB. With only two on the roster, we are thin. . Pick up a lineman. Pick up a DB. Pick up a spare receiver. But looking to blow that money on another higher profile QB knowing that Faison might look around if he feels like he's likely to sit for 2 years is foolish.
Bottom line is, if you're not going to play the guys you recruit, then stop recruiting them. Just live out of the portal. Steal known talent. Be Ol Miss.
You need 3 qbs. It’s not a discussion we abso need a qb, and we need maybe not a high profile guy, but an upper classmen. Then if I was Huep I’d let them battle it out n practice and trust my gut On who to start. We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. Because 2 scholarship qbs, inexperienced freshman no less, is not enough to be confident you won’t be playing an rb/wr at qb by end of the season due to injury. We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. Gmac’s body is not ready for sec football. He still needs to gain 15 lbs of lean muscle on his frame to withstand a full season. If it's up to me, I would start G-Mac, and bring in an experienced, small school guy that we could get on the cheap to compete with Merklinger for the backup role. Then I would use the saved money to get a high profile skilled position player we can feature the offense around.
You think Josh Heupel would play a guy who is not the best QB because of NIL? You think he places what we've spent over putting the best team on the field?
We have bigger problems than our roster if that's true.
I can see Hype, as a former QB, stating the same thing.Because 2 scholarship qbs, inexperienced freshman no less, is not enough to be confident you won’t be playing an rb/wr at qb by end of the season due to injury.
Heup also does not like playing a qb before he knows they are ready because he doesn’t want to break their confidence and hinder their development.
And if you’re going to bring someone in, why even do it if you’re not confident in their ability to get it done when you need them to. Might as well get starter quality. Will make the whole qb room better if they are all dogs and if any of them aren’t better to find that out now going into next portal window than by end of season when you’ll be behind the eight ball scouting and putting out feelers.
Answer this: what use to a contender does a scrub qb have? Be a lot harder to find and less valuable to the on field product to get the best clipboard holder in the nation as opposed to finding one of the best QBs.
My only question is does he or ant freshman have the physical body to withstand SEC pressure. I think a smart young quarterback can otherwise play early. We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. If we have to "take our lumps" we need to support the decision and not be bitchin about a coaching change half way through the season. Not sure how you go into the portal at such a late date and get a "sure fire" starter. Even if they do money whip someone into coming, he's going to face a lot of challenges. Seriously, he won't have benefit of a spring. Think about bonding, learning the system, timing, etc. Think about jumping into this league for a team under those circumstances with an uncertain OL and group of WRs. Heupel will be a magician if he pulls this off. Really think the idea of a backup guy and taking our lumps with Merk/Mac is the best bet long term.
We are led to believe that they all are elite. Jake was the #13 QB in his recruiting class. GMac was the #17 QB in his class. Sure. Nico was #2 in his class but has that translated to "elite" on the field in college football? Absolutely not. Elite QB's actually can step in as true or RS freshmen and kill it. I mean, Jesus, how many times has Florida whipped us after their starting QB gets injured and their freshman, never taken a snap in college football, stepped in and made us look stupid..........we were led to believe he was elite.
That’s been my point all along. Through the years I’ve seen freshman start at QB, LT, WR, CB, and LB for Bama, UF, LSU, and UGA. However UT has difficulty putting highly recruited and highly ranked players on the field as freshman. In this day of NIL and the portal there’s very few youngsters going to sit and watch everybody else play. You may win the recruiting wars for them out of high school only to watch them leave in the portal after never playing much more than or even a down for you. Things have changed, if a 5 star type player actually has that kind of talent better find a way to get them on the field asap. However if a youngster is not what you thought he was I can see showing h8m his future is the portal. Worse case is having a 5 star and you treat him like he may as well hit the portal. We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a true freshmen that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a 5* coming in the next class. What's the point of recruiting them if you're scared to play them? The Florida analogy is something I've reflected on a good big in the past week. If they can roll out random QBs and pull out unexpected Ws, why can't we? They are the reason I said yesterday that we'll be an 8-4 team but gritty enough to beat anyone. We are led to believe that they all are elite. Jake was the #13 QB in his recruiting class. GMac was the #17 QB in his class. Sure. Nico was #2 in his class but has that translated to "elite" on the field in college football? Absolutely not. So you think because George Macintyre didn't beat out Nico in the 3+ months he was on campus, he should lose his scholarship?Did he beat them out because he was the best player or was the millions of dollars we would be paying Nico to sit on the sidelines influencing that? If Nico was that head and shoulders above the other two, we should cut their scholarships right now.
