Why I decided to sit home and not vote for McCain

According to the 2009 Discretionary Budget of 1182 Billion, 799 Billion is earmarked for Military/National Security.
you might delve into that a bit, because you're off by light years. How much of that pile do you believe is Nat'l security style intelligence budget? How much is procurement and equipment, then how much operates the domestic forces and guard / reserve? That might help.

McCain wasn't conservative enough for you? Who did you want? Mussolini has been dead for what, over 60 years?

We haven't seen a true conservative since Reagan, perhaps Bush 1. If you can't tell the difference between Reagan and Bush 2 there is no sense in debating any further with you on the matter.

I'm reading the budget now , think I might need an accounting class.

Here is the breakout I found.

forget it. $300 billion isn't the forward base operating budget. Those bases are generally strategic and probably lacking. That 540.9 billion number covers much. I don't actually know the exact numbers, but the overseas piece doesn't represent anywhere near 50% of our defense budget.

I found it and I was wrong, the operating budget for bases is $23,000,000,000+, I was way off. Not sure if that includes salaries, or just the operating expenses for the bases.

I hope you are happy with Obama.

By sitting at home, you helped elect him.

Or, I look at it as one less vote that he would have been able to count on.

Democrats are angry that I didn't vote for the socialist and GOP'ers are mad because I didn't vote for someone that was to the left of Bush...

Oh well... maybe the GOP can get it right in 2012.

My bad, read past "just about" and I apologize.

Closing foreign military bases - yes to the ones we don't need, we currently have more than 700 bases scattered around the world in 63 different countries. This costs us upwards of 300 billion dollars a year. I think it would be prudent to examine closely the ones we need and the ones we don't need (do we really need a base in Japan?)

CIA - I think we need an organization such as this, might be time for an overhaul. No different than us scrapping the OSS in favor of the CIA. I think Ron's objection to it is that we don't need to be interfering in other country's affairs, which is basically what the CIA does.

Repeal the 16th admendment - absolutely, we did just fine without an income tax for our first 137 years. We should come up with a way that all taxes are visible to our citizens. When I hear someone talk about "take home pay" I'm pretty sure they don't have a clue how much they pay in taxes per year. The system is too complicated when the IRS itself can't even answer questions.

Ron's ideas may seem loony, but just like any other candidate, not all of them would get through. Do you truly think that McCain was the best guy to put up against Obama when the majority of the country was screaming for change?

I think Ron Paul said a lot of things that make sense. I actually donated a small amount to his campaign just out of principle. Economically he said all the right things and I don't think he was talking nonsense about the way we should conduct our foreign policy in the Middle East. But if you think he had a better shot at winning this election than McCain did you are crazy.

He didn't just want an overhaul of the CIA, he wanted to get rid of it. That is nuts. The federal reserve is a necessary evil IMO. And getting rid of all military bases in Japan is flat out crazy given the multitude of possible security situations that could flair up in the far east and the fact that we are basically their military by treaty.

From what I remember from middle school and high school history, Japan could have gotten its military reestablished in th year 2000...

Sure...

Truth is, both of these guys were going to lean this country closer to socialism.

I'm glad the GOP got their heads handed to them. Maybe they will actually run on conservative principles in 2012 and leave the appeasement of moderates to the leftists...

Fat chance on that, looks like.

I guess I'll be sitting at home next year, also.

I heard that if reelected, Obama plans to appoint Erik Ainge to his cabinet.

What happened to that group of guys that came into Washington in 1994 and gave us the Contract with America? Where are they at? You couldn't find any of those guys with a GPS system...

They stupidly went after a president on some pretty weak charges that really didn't have ardent support from the populace as a whole and they never recovered from that political disaster. Instead of throwing a tantrum that they didn't win the White House with their lame ass candidate, they should have focused more on actually still trying to fix things than to ruin the other side's power. Not only that they could have realized that the guy would be out in 4 years regardless.

Its easy to tell the difference. Reagan raised taxes and Bush II cut them.

Cindy McCain, wife of late GOP senator, endorses Joe Biden

Both Cindy McCain and her daughter Meghan have been outspoken critics of President Trump, and the family is longtime friends with the Bidens.

Trump first targeted John McCain personally in 2015, saying the former prisoner of war wasn't a hero "because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

McCain later angered Trump with his dramatic thumbs-down vote against repealing President Obama's health care law. Before McCain died of cancer in August 2018, reports suggested he made an explicit request that Trump not be invited to his funeral.
