The thing that makes me so sad and disappointed is not THAT we lost, but HOW we lose. We dont even look like an FCS team right now. I have no clue where Derek Dooley got these awful players. We had the chance of a century to beat Florida. And we may never have that same chance ever again. Florida will damn sure be back and Im sure it will happen when Tennessee is back, which means more losing to Florida. We blew the chance of a lifetime.
I don't think the players are awful. In fact I think we have some incredible talent. Truth be said we still have more talent then some other teams in the SEC more competitive then us. However they have not had one coach, or one system. The Constant change has taken it's toll. Also when your spending all your time learning new systems, there's less time for assistants to work on better techniques and fundamentals.
What I like about Butch is for the first time in awhile this team has looked much more disciplined. The few number of penalties is a great indicator on that. Discipline is always a BARE minimum requirement to get things on the right track, and not only did we not have any under Dooley or Kiffin, but I must admit Fulmer had let it go as well.
We have plenty of talent to be competitive, we have some very good talent at freshman level we'll see more next year...and we have one of the best recruiting classes that will be freshman next year....
I know after 2 new coaches the "have patience" line feels old, but really we have got to have that. Butch runs a very different offense then honestly we have ever had at Tennessee. It's very fast paced, and more like Georgia Tech and Oregon. It requires extreme timing and discipline. You can't just athletically power through it. However he has successfully implemented it at lower schools with much lower levels of talent and done so in short order....he'll do it here.
Have patience and look for the changes.....they're easy to see if your paying attention.....but this year is really still an adjustment period......
