You've chosen a college based on a desire to play in the NBA. You've had an excellent year, and you're told by the pro scout types that you've got a good shot at going in the first round of the NBA draft. You play on a team with a roster that promises to be significantly worse next year than it's been this year, a coach that might be banned by the NCAA for the rest of your college career, and which might be banned from postseason play next year. What possible motivation do you have to come back to college for another year?

Come on he plays in the sec which is not that strong. On a team that's not that great and he does have a lot that another yr could help improve. His dad is smart he knows with the NBA draft if ur not a guaranteed first rounder its best not to come out. All NBA rosters are small its a small window of opportunity and the hardest sport to get a roster spot..... Besides since u know all of this is already for sure were is ur link that this has been said about him and is very solid info. All this NCAA stuff was ongoin when he signed to play. If his desire to play in the NBA was so high why come and play for Pearl? Who has he put in the NBA and especially after one season. And his track record style of play isn't the NBA game. I can name ten coaches I woulda played for if my desire was that high..

There's a good NY Times article about Harris you should Google up and read. The plan was to play two years in college, then come out. A big reason they picked Tennessee was because Pearl doesn't have any reputation for putting guys in the NBA -- his dad's quote was something like, "I think Pearl will want to get Tobias in the NBA worse than Tobias himself will." Obviously, none of the really severe, potentially Pearl-killing NCAA stuff was going on last spring when Harris picked UT.

Rucker thinks Harris is leaning towards coming out now. Maybe he wouldn't be if next year were going to be a secure situation, but obviously it's not. It'll probably come down to what the NBA guys tell him after the season. If they say he's a probable 1st round pick, he'll probably gone.

Game, set, and match. Thanks for playing, kids.

Takin a gamble on an uproven coach to get to the NBA is risky.. yes I read it but why not jus choose one of the proven coaches.. look at Scotty yes he shows brilliance at times but at times its like he gets lost and doesn even know his role.. and he too was a highly regarded incoming freshmen..

The handful of "proven coaches" all have rosters stacked with all-Americans. The Harrises knew that if he came to Knoxville, he'd not just get immediate playing time, but be a focal point of the offense as a true freshman. Plus, as we know, Bruce Pearl is a hell of a salesman.

If ur that good go where the competition is.. see Terrence Jones rated a top 15 pick and Tobias 30 to 37. Like I said a yr wouldn hurt his stock imo.. as we all know Bruce can't sell anyone to the NBA.

Door #1 is an NBA paycheck. Maybe not the completely maximized rookie paycheck that you might get after a second year in college, but still -- a big paycheck, professional coaching, and the start of your pro career.

Door #2 is the absolute crapshoot of a season that is Vol basketball, 2011-2012. Who's your coach? Who's on the team? Will you be eligible for postseason play? Will you get double- and triple-teamed on every possession because you're playing with Renaldo Woolridge?

If I'm Tobias Harris, the NBA guys would have to be pretty damn pessimistic about my draft prospects for me to pick Door #2.

Door number 2 is not as bad as you make it sound. Look as Perry Jone's stock. He is on an awful Baylor team. Saying that, I think he's gone because if he were going to stay he would want to win BIG.

Oh, I don't think it would actually hurt his stock to come back next year, but it sure has the potential to be absolutely no fun at all. So Door #2 is a potentially miserable season while you're broke and still having to go to classes. Whee.

Well I agree then. I still am holding out hope that he and Scotty come back and we either get a new coach or Bruce escapes with little punishment. I would say 10% chance.
