I still say Florida picks up a Big 12 or Pac 10 team atleast once in a while. I think it was 1990 the last time Florida played a regular season game against either one. But they do still have Florida State every year. That's gotta count for something. Tennessee's "Florida State" is Memphis, and we don't have to play them every year.

In 2002 we played Miami and UAB as two of our nonconference games. We played Miami again in 2003. In 2005 we played a decent Wyoming team.

In 2004, you played UNLV and La. Tech, though you did add in Notre Dame (and of course you lost). In 2003 you played Marshall and Fresno State, though you did beat Miami that year.

In 2002 you played Wyoming (which at that time sucked) plus MTSU and Rutgers, beating all three by a combined score of 98-24. What a freakin joke that was. Oh, and right in the middle of those three you lost to Florida.

I grow weary of this comparison.

How'd those '02 and '03 games against the 'Canes turn out for you? Guess it'll be another 15-20 years before schedule another beating. Also, you talked about playing two top teams in another conference as if it is an impossibility. Seems Miami had UT and UF on their schedule in '02 and '03.

In 2002, you also played Ohio. In 2003, you played San Jose St., and Florida A&M. In 2004, you played Eastern Michigan and MTSU.

But not home and away for Florida year in and year out, I don't believe. That's the problem. The ticket sales at Florida, along with the other alumni dollars, are just too much to give up every other year. The program is much better off paying Southern Miss $400K while generating $4 million in revenue, versus spending $250K to go to Miami and leave a bunch of money on the table.

How else do you think we can afford the best facilities in the country?

If you think the O Dump is one of the best basketball facilities in the country, you really might want to travel more. It would be considered a poor excuse for a high school gym in many states.

You leave out the part about how it's much better for a program with an already fragile and inflated sense of self worth to beat some "C-USA Bowl Team" than it is for them to get hammered by the 'Canes.

It's just not very impressive. I don't hold it against UF. Basketball wasn't that big a deal at UF when they built it, so they went for the multipurpose aquatic
center/basketball gym setup. It simply pales in comparison to Rupp, the FedEx Forum, and any number of other hoops facilities.

i like how when you play Wyoming they're decent, and when we play them, not so good....but anyway, i don't think anyone can argue that TN generally plays a pretty good non conference schedule. And for the majority of the last 20 years to be considered one of the top 2-3 teams in the SEC and still play on a semi regular basis the likes of UCLA and Notre Dame and throwing in Miami, Syracuse, Washington State among others, is pretty respectable. and going forward having games against Cal, UCLA, NCSU, UNC, OK, Nebraska etc....i don't know that there is much reason to doubt that TN is looking for marquee matchups, even if that means we hit the road to do so. throw in the occaisonal mid major teams that are sometimes good, sometimes not, like Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss, Northern Illinois, and the schedule is not so "padded".

UF has FSU every year, and that's fine and also very respectable, but other than that, and the two games you played against Miami a few years ago, the cupboard is pretty bare for decent non conference games.

the only team that's worse is UGA. they don't ever play anybody out of conference except GT, and they use that as much of a crutch as UF does FSU....

Fla and UGA share the same problem; an intrastate rivalry with a nonconference opponent AND a game played every year at a neutral site. It's tough for them to give up a home date.

I agree. It's sort of a lame excuse. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads making them play each other in Jacksonville. I'm sure the decision is motivated like everything else though $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

The only people who think that game is at a neutral site is the Florida fans. Who ever agreed to that probably wanted Ray Goff as head coach.

I disagree. That game is one of the most anticipated binges . . . errrr . . . trips for GA fans every year. Also, GA is a huge state and there are tons of UGA fans down that way who are a lot closer to Jacksonville than to Athens.

I really don't have a problem with the way Florida schedules. Tennessee picks up one real out of conference game every season and schedules the rest as mid-major cannon fodder. With an 8 game conference schedule plus a potential championship game, I'd stack that SOS against anybody's in the country. Florida does the same thing, only that "real" game is against Bowden and the boys every year. If they were annually on UT's schedule, I'd be the first one calling to fill up those other two or three spots with teams from the Metro.
