You know people complain about watching women's basketball..and what do they bring in rules that make it hard to watch. All the fouls really slow down the action and detract from the game. I have been a long time supporter of women's sports and I found this game so hard to watch!!! I won't blame it all on the fouls because the turnovers were awful too!!!
If this game is indicative of things to come on the ref front (and let us hope it is not), then having a deep bench is going to be even more important. These new, no contact, rules would seem to guarantee that players will be in foul trouble and hence teams will have to go deeper in their bench on a routine basis. While i can undertstand the rationale for cutting back on hand checking, this stricter no bump rule seems very counterproductive.
Some of the defensive lapses and offensive standing around were from not playing with each other sufficiently. Getting a unit playing together is essential. The five player substitution in the late first quarter was initially not functioning well. And I felt that as well as they pushed the ball up the floor players didn't spot up in open areas immediately against the zone.
I can easily argue the importance of having such a game this early, more can be learned than from playing the exhibition and Central Arkansas.
We never subbed 5 players at once, never happened. We did sub 3 late in the first quarter.
Holding, shoving and grabbing are different from bumping. Holding and shoving and grabbing should be called fouls, but not leaning on someone with your body or bumping them a bit. I'm all for calling some of the egregious stuff--and big players like Russell and many others have taken a beating over the years, so if the new rules help the bigs a bit, I'm fine with it. But don't get carried away. A lot of times, officials start the year enforcing rules (or new rules) strongly and then ease up (either intentionally or otherwise) as the season moves along.
