Why Tennessee will finish the year 8-4

Dear Volnation,

Last night I was able to witness in person a change. Tennessee was down 17-3 at halftime and could have laid down and blown out of their stadium. With a brand new coaching staff, our recent history, and a team that consists mostly of inexperienced players/ freshman I don't think many of us would have been too surprised if the score had been something like 38-10. However, everyone from Devaun Swafford to Justin Worley stepped up to make it a ball game. Aaron Murray is one of the best QBs in the nation and one of the best in SEC history and we didn't let him take the game out of reach. Georgia had a lot of injuries but even with them they were still incredibly talented and Tennessee gave their all for 60 mins and then some. The crowd and the student section did their part, which was absolutely amazing. The college football world is taking note. Yes we did lose and losing is sucks, I am still sick over the outcome, but if Tennessee plays like that for the remainder of the season there is no reason why we shouldn't be going into a bowl game 8-4.

South Carolina is beatable, hands down.
Alabama will be a loss but I think we will play them tough and hang with them for a while.
Missouri may be 5-0 but they haven't played anybody. Don't try to tell me they're world beaters.
Auburn is a big home game and like South Carolina, they are beatable.
Vanderbilt will be destroyed, I hate those idiots.
Kentucky hahahahahahahaha
I love this thread. I think you are over-reaching with eight wins. I think that 7-5 is the best case scenario, but I would not rule out 8-4. I expect at least 6-6.

for us to get to 8 wins a few things have to happen.

1 we have to stay healthy.
2 Worley has to play as good or better as he did in the 2nd half, all season.
3 some of our young skill position guys have to break out

not saying it will or won't happen. but i'm hoping it does.

Okay guys, I'm all for positive thinking but we've had one good half against a good team this year. I certainly hope we keep the momentum going, but counting on future wins at this point seems rather silly.

Why is it silly? We played a great half against a great team. We did that with a lot of freshman and young players. What is wrong with having confidence? Also are those predictions that laughable? SC struggled against UK, Vandy doesn't look like they did last year, they look much worse, Mizzou has looked good but there again they haven't played anybody. Auburn could be one to worry about and UK is no threat. I think this game was a turning point for the Vols.

Not so fast my friend, just last week this was one of, if not, the worst team Tennessee has ever put on the field.
Now with that being said, we did witness progress with this team on Saturday. There are lot's of if's still left with this team, they will have to come out and show fans that they have indeed turned some sort of corner so to speek.
Road games in the SEC are difficult for the best teams and there's allot of football left to be played, so let's hope we do continue forward and not take a few steps backwards.
Go Vols

This.

People are getting a little ahead of themselves. I get the optimism but we still can easily finish 6-6.

Everybody needs to realize that UT will be an underdog in every game left on the schedule this year with the possible exception of ky based off of the season so far. If the Vols play the rest of the year like the second half of the ga game, then 8-4 is possible. If we resort back to the second half of the usa game, then we will be lucky to go 6-6.

I still stand by what I said earlier, Tennessee finishes 8-4 if they play they did yesterday against the rest of their opponents. I will be even more so convinced if they beat South Carolina.

The team will not quit on Butch but we have to really be lucky to avoid the injury bug going forward. We just don't have the depth to overcome injuries---especially at the skill positions. We are playing much better now so; here's hoping we can avoid the bug.

I also think we have a chance at being 8-4. My prediction at the beginning of the year was 7-5, but 8-4 is a possibility if we beat one of the big 5 teams on the schedule.

True but what's wrong with being exited and confident in your team?

Exited and confident in the team? That's unacceptable. The "realists" are the only ones who can set the right expectations for everyone, and they say that you have to lower your expectations if it's a winning season.

This team got lucky yesterday, yes we played hard, and yes we didn't quit, but we got almost all the breaks yesterday.

Georgia played a huge, emotional game against a top 10 team last week. They expended a lot and they won. Then had to travel to Neyland. It was packed, it was loud, and it was awesome for us. It definitely effected them.

Then you look at their injuries...
Georgia's #1 receiver - out for the year
Georgia's #3 receiver - injured in the 3rd quarter.
Georgia's #1 RB - out for the game
Georgia's #2 RB - injured in the 1st quarter
Georgia's #1 TE - injured in the 3rd quarter

We should have won that game, and had I told you before the game Georgia would be without 2 of their top 3 receivers, their top TE, and their top 2 RB's, you woulda said "We gonna whip dey ass", but we didn't. I still see us struggling to get 6 wins, but I hope we can, we need the extra practice time, and the recruiting buzz of a bowl game

6-6/7-5 is still more likely, however there is definitely reason for optimism.

None of those injured players are on defense, and if I recall we scored 31 on UGA and converted three 4th downs in the same drive to get our final score. If you attribute all of that to just being lucky...

I don't know if you saw the Butch Jones show on Sunday or not, but coach was talking about all the progress that the fans don't get to see in practice and in team meetings. He said he really believes that the team is starting to believe in each other and buy in. If Butch really believes this why shouldn't we have some optimism. I don't think we should start counting wins but there isn't any reason to think we can't be competitive in the remaining games this season.

South Carolina could set the tone for the last 5 games.
It will be Worley's second start against the Gamecocks.
In 2011 the game ended as a 14-3 loss at Neyland.
TN had virtually no offense to speak of and Worley was intercepted 2 times and sacked 3 times before being replaced by Simms.
It's an unbelievable statement, but Justin has a much better supporting cast going into this game.
If he shines, and we win, we could very well end up with 7 or 8 in the win column.

I'm not really thinking we'll go 8-4. This team is just not deep enough and they're too young. If we somehow beat South Carolina, we'll definitely suffer a down game.

Auburn is looking good. I thought they were a loss before the season started.

Mizzou reminds me of 2012 Mississippi State. Start great against #(*&@ teams. They beat Vandy but IMO Vandy also got exposed. They have racked up a decent record in the last 2 years but against nobodies. They're not playing horrible UT/Auburn/Arky teams this year and it shows. We need to get something figured out regarding stopping a mobile QB or this game could be nasty.

Vandy is definitely beatable and I think the team could be amped against them like they were against Georgia.

Kentucky is definitely beatable.

8-4 and Butch is National COTY. Hands down. 6-6, and Butch should be a front runner for SEC COTY. All I want is 6 wins and go to a bowl. Anything more and I'll be ecstatic.

Valid point, but even with all those injuries they still had Murray and slew of other talent. Peyton Manning and the Colts had nobody in 2010 and they still won 10 games...
