Why UT lost to LSU

The whole TigerPimp thing screams "midlife crisis".

As for the game, calling to get rid of Chavis is getting far too carried away.

1. We had a top-10 defense last year.
2. We have 8 new starters this year (7 before Harell went down).
3. We are horribly undersized at DT. We start a walkon and someone that weighs 275ish.
4. Because of injuries we have a safety playing corner.
5. Our defense was on the field over 2/3s of the game, including almost the entire fourth quarter. That doesnt happen if Ainge is healthy.
6. That defense scored 7 points and four turnovers. Otherwise this game is a rout.

And face it, that was by inches. We were in position to make the play and missed knocking down that pass by fingertips. That's how close we came to beating a team that was quite apparently our superior, even though our starting QB was out.

Anyone think we should have used some timeouts or at least one to not only give the D some chance to regroup but to break some momentum AND to try and save some time for us as well? When LSU was moving in field goal range should we have used one or more?

Just got back from East Tennessee and the thriller in Neyland and don't want to rehash what's already been said but I feel the following mistakes were made that cost us the game (should never lose a game when other team gives you four turnovers):

1) Ainge should have never started. He was physically not mobile enough to protect himself and we wasted the entire first quarter with three straight three and out posessions.
2) After the INT touchdown, to start the third quarter, our defense failed to stop LSU but let them drive the field and change the momentum. I was at the 1990 against Florida when Dale Carter returned the second half kickoff for a TD and this turned a close game into a 45-3 route.
3)Our defense was terrible, giving up almost 500 yards total offense. Chavis consistently in close games in the fourth quarter is unable to make a crutial stop. This game, the Florida game this year, multiple games last year (Vandy,South Carolina, Bama) Not to mention the 2001 and 2004 championship games. It's time to replace him with a Gene Czhick, Will Muschamp type, IMO).
4) Have to reinvent our running game. Hard to believe only two years ago we had two 1000 yard rushers (Riggs and Houston). It may be that our OL is too weak or our RB's are mediocre.

As an aside, saw those "Would-Be-Pimp" LSU gay looking bunch sashaying in our place. Actually saw some UT fans asking to have their pics taken with this sorry bunch. Have we no pride!

I agree that we should have started Crompton from the beginning, but how many drops were there when Ainge was in there? I have to disagree with you about Chavis. The defense never seems to be a problem. Prior to the LSU game UT's defense had not given up a 200-yd passer and only one 100-yd rusher. Our running game didnt do anything, but we have gotten by without that the last couple of games. LSU was just the better team on Saturday, thats all I have to say.

Hell yes we should have. I am surprised Fulmer has not been berated on here for not using them. I was screaming at my TV for that idiot to start using them.

That's a tough call. While a timeout may or may not have helped, it's hard to give LSU more time to figure out their plays when they have been shooting themselves in the foot the whole game. In retrospect, it's easy to say yes..

The one situation that I was more disturbed by was that we didn't take a shot to the endzone right before halftime on 3rd down. Tennessee had 8 seconds on the clock and had one timeout left. If Crompton got the ball out quickly, it would have been more than enough time.

My feeling was, LSU was going to score. They had been running all over us. I wanted time left so we could have a chance to score.

I agree with your second point and add that I thought Fulmer was useless in this game. Going against a top notch team like LSU with your back up QB, I really thought we would pull a fake punt or fake FG, or something of this nature. I thought we would need something like that given the circumstances. He did nothing worthy of talking about.

I love all this second guessing crap. It was good game with personnel that were available. Ainge is/was right guy to start. He would have settled down as he did in Bama game but reinjuring didn't give him chance. I am really impressed with Crompton's play vs a tough defense such as LSU's. He made some freshman mistakes but hey he made some really nice plays too. Defense got beat on the last drive. What ja gonna do. LSU ain't no push over and I for one am impressed with their play overall. They never gave up and it was a hell of game.

yes it hurt, up late and still hurting, but lsu aint chopped liver. look at the top 15 or so teams, let em play week in week out in sec, how many are 7-2?? notre dame? cal? usc? michigan (puhlease!!!) wisconsin? i would love for the vols to face any of thoise teams in a bowl game, oh yeah sorry we already beat the bear---- out of cal. if the vols can finish out 10-2 and go to a decent bowl my preseason hopes are met!! sights set to low, i dont think so, i have judged UT for years as successful if competitng for sec and in the top 10 to 15 teams. most years we have done this, not all but most, especially under cpf and the much maligned (lately) chavis.:nono:
