I used to see that stuff growing wild all over and never see it anymore.

All over my property in the high grass areas that I don't trim normally.

In the book, they claim it is only in 5 counties within the state of Tennessee; Wayne, Lewis, Marshall, Williamson and Davidson. I'm in Anderson and remember this plant being all over as a kid.

This is what my Dad calls a Wine Berry. These have not opened up yet, when they do, I will post a pic of them ripened.

Bump

Here they are opened up and getting ready for picking.

Anyone help with identifying this plant? Cut it down in my flowerbed and was worried it might be poison sumac. Red stems and leaf shapes match but supposedly the berries aren't red or purple. This is just a peice off the end of a stem.

I think that is Pokeweed. I believe the berries are toxic, iirc.P1050058.JPG

Can be poisonous to eat but not touch? I try to do a good job of wearing gloves, pants, ect but some of the leaves fell across my shoulder/arm when cutting it down. Then I walked through where it was laying on the grass after putting it in the yard waste bucket. Was worried about oil on the bottom of my shoes tracking inside and I think I did wipe my face with my shirt sleeve once without thinking.

Had some bad times with poison ivy in the past and now I tend to be a little cautious, overly I'm sure, around suspect plants.

Polk weed (salad)

The whole plant is poisonous.
It can be consumed if you boil and drain it like 1000 times. Lol

Old timers still eat it.
No sir, It's actually Pokeweed. I've ate a ton of it as a kid.
Here is the "Polk Salad" origin:

The cooked version of this weed is properly referred to as "poke sallet," but like with so many traditions that have survived via word of mouth, the pronunciation can often be found altered, most commonly to "poke salad." You might also see it spelled "polk salad" or "polk sallet." The "polk" spelling was popularized by a 1968 country/pop song by Tony Joe White called "Polk Salad Annie."

Poke salad,

Boil it/cook it 3 times, mix with some eggs after third boil...
