Will Dooley Go After Big Names?

Of course you can sell integrity to 17 year old kids. Half of UF's commits were quoted just after committing as saying they enjoyed "Urban's family atmosphere" or had an "emotional talk with Urban."

The real selling of integrity occurs with the parents though.
Sell the program and playing time to the players and the integrity and life coaching the players will get to the parents.

two championships in three years helps a little to.

Of course several came because of Kiffin and staff, but to think Dooley isn't going to bring in great recruiting classes because he doesn't have the 'Kiffin flare' is absurd. CDD did a fine job as recruiting coordinator under Saban at LSU. With that experience and the experience of the rest of the staff, we should be able to recruit head-to-head against other universities for the top players in the Southeast.

Believe me i want you to be right. But when it comes to kids that grew up liking another team (basically all the good recruits) some times something else is needed. I believe it can be done, maybe my question should have been will there be as much interest as kiffin had.

Yes, he will dominate big names and pull them from Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.

That is pretty strong.

you seem to forget that Fulmer pulled in some very talented recruiting classes....I guess we will find out soon enough if CDD can bring them in, but doing it Kiffin's way is not the only way to go about it. Auburn proved that to be true this year.

Two out of the last three classes before kiffin didnt really seem to care this is Tennessee.(might as well say all three because except eric berry and walker there was not much production.)

I thought J.Mayo produced.When healthy Rico McCoy produced.:good!:

True, but I don't explicitly remember ready any quotes from recruits saying they were going because they won 2 of the last 3 championships. Its all about the "family atmosphere" and "late night emotional phone calls."

Granted the championships definitely help.

Kiff's selling point was the NFL. Someone did a poll yesterday and asked a number of recruits why they chose the school they did. The most common answer was ....because it would best prepare me for the NFL.

There just as many recruits and parents that disliked X's actions if not more than the ones who liked them. There were guys that we lost out on that would likely have been here if not for Kiffin. I think we'll be just fine and I'm hoping we get guys that want to be here instead of turning our program into a sideshow that would make Vince McMahon blush to attract kids.

Yes. Luckily for Dooley, next year is a much better instate year for talent. This should help his transition.

I don't buy into the in state talent argument. This is where I will give Fulmer credit. His line on this was that anything within 250 miles of Knoxville was considered in state.

Yeah i get you, but i think the ships helped the recruits take harder looks at the program.

With all he had going against him Dooley and Co. put together a really good class. He did what was needed by filling it with bodies of good players.

But with a will Dooley be able to attract big name in 2011 (without the smoke and mirrors of kiffin)?

Loften, Hunter, Rogers, Neal, Stone were all big names. The big names are usually the 4 and 5 star prospects your school is going after because those are the ones you pay attention to.

is that hacksaw jim duggan in your avatar, hoss? HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! U S A! U S A!

sorry, i couldn't help it. But I do think Dooley will prove himself as a recruiter. I like his "Tennessee sells itself" talk...

Hahah. It's actually Hillbilly Jim, but nice reference.

No...I think he will only go after lesser known prospects...that way we don't have to worry about being dissappointed when we lose the "big names" to the real football programs

Derek Dooley will go after the big names, you look at the players that we got after Dooley, Justin Hunter, Eddrick Loften, James Stone, Da'Rick Rogers, all those players were big name players, he might go after some 3 star and 2 star players but he's not going to mainly go after those players. He knows how to recruit it's just a matter of time if he can develop them properly.

The question should have been can Dooley attract big names.

Ahh...yes...:)

Just giving you a hard time...

To answer...yes I do believe he will...

When you look at him and his staff you see experience (NFL and college), energy, a good reputation for X's and O's, and integrity...

Dooley is known as being a good recruiter and he has staff members that have that same reputation...

I also get the feeling that Dooley is very personable...he's also very honest and straightforward....

I think these are all things that are going to appeal to the best prospects...especially in the southeast...

You combine all of that with the fact that the state of Tennessee will have an unusual amount of D-1 prospects next year and I think we are set up to land a very impressive class

This is no different than Dooley:

“Before Dooley, not so interested. After Dooley, a lot interested,” Rogers said. “So it was a big thing for me.”

What specifically did he like about the coaching staff?

“I fell in love with their NFL style of coaching,” he said. “Coach Dooley talked about building a brand and I liked that.”

People seem like they keep forgetting that CDD was the engineer of two number 1 classes at LSU. He didn't just stumble out of the backwoods of college football. The guy knows how to lure the big names.

A lot of the names were already thinking about Tenn because of kiffin (i also know ppl like stone hated him and would not have came.) but what im talking about is him getting big names with out any ground already laid for him.

The groundwork? You mean the groundwork like x and o having a whole year to recruit them and them calling everyone trying to flip them to USC? Yeah, I think he will be ok with out groundwork like that.
