will illinois call on cuonzo

Since when is Tennessee a stepping stone job? If I remember correctly our attendance ranks among top 5 nationally. Our resources and facilities are unmatched by any Big Ten School (With the exception of maybe tOSU). Why would he leave? He wouldnt.

Excellent point.

Illinois is a prestigious university and has a top 25 college b-ball history, but Indiana and Michigan's programs have gotten much better since Weber took over at Illinois. Hence, this is not as an attractive job because the Big 10 is arguably the best b-ball conference in the country this year, along with the Big East. Also, Illinois has always had a hard time getting inner city Chicago kids.

Cuonzo is in a great position at UT. He will have 4 starters returning and a good core group of bench players next year. He has the fan support and I wouldn't worry about anything until next year is over.

Additionally, there will not be many big jobs open this year, unlike last year. ACC has a ton of coaches with less than 3 years in the league, SEC positions are filled at the good schools and Big East won't be hiring many people either.

OP didn't ask whether Cuonzo would accept, but rather if they would/will call him. I honestly think they might.. He's originally from the Chicago area, has recruiting ties there, etc.

He's from East St Louis.

A lot of coaches desire to go back to what they know (he played and coached in the B1G) so it's not out of the question.

But I hope he won't and don't think he does

Could be wrong, but I'm guessing tha Martin will be getting a decent raise after this season. Luckily for us, our AD can spend the money.

Martin knows what he has here at UT and that he is in a great position. Why would anyone want to leave a program on the upswing to join one on the downslope?

I'm sure CCM is probably on the radar for Illinois, though I suspect they view themselves as above that. Not that they wouldn't admit that publicly. They will shoot for the moon likely, and miss. CCM is probably on their second tier for regional purposes, though he's from East St Louis, not Chicago as a poster said earlier.

He's bright, tough, defensive-minded, young, and plays a brand of ball that fits the Illinois mindset and Big 10 mindset.

Why wouldn't they consider him? I doubt he leaves, but you make a call, just like we did to some unlikely candidates this time last year.

You posters bashing him need to re read the OP...

Will Illinois call????

Yea they probably will. Their AD should be fired if they don't make the call.

I would highly doubt he will leave though. I think most vacant schools will make a phone call to gauge interest.

But I don't see him leaving.

My cousin's neighbor's uncle say that Martin is currently busy and can't take a call.

Martin won't even be on the top of their list like some people are assuming. He's had a good second half to the season here in year 1, that's not going to be enough to get legitimate interest from bigger programs unless they strike out several times.

This is funny...I remember plenty of SO CALLED VOL FANS wondering if CCM was big enough for the position....I get soo over this board some times....just a bunch of High School Girls starting rumors (Sorry for the reference)...Im sure Hart will take care of business...he knows what it takes and doesnt mind making moves as needed...

I don't understand.
1) It's a Vol Discussion Forum
2) It's in the Basketball section
3) It's about our coach
4) Before Pearl we were never thought of as a Basketball school

Someone asks a questions about another school seeking our coach and everyone gets upset.

Why?

I'm only saying that everyone jumps at people waaay too much. If you don't like the thread or the poster then why not just move on. I just don't see an arguement but moreso a question here.

Define call?????? We all know athletic directors make calls through back channels to gauge coaches interest. So yes I believe a call will be made. Do I believe it will amount to anything other than thanks for the inquiry but I am happy at Tennessee.

Exactly.

That's what the OP asked, would a call be made?

I would fully expect a call to gauge interest from CCM. In fact, many schools will probably make that call this off season.

We play a Big Ten style of basketball. We're lucky to have Martin, whom likely would have been a candidate for the Illinois job if he were still at Missouri State. He's not leaving Stokes or UT for Illinois now.

He is not leaving period. We gave him his big break, and he seems extremely dedicated to Tennessee. I think he sticks around for a very long time. He has integrity, and that shouldn't be discounted.
