Apparently it's official. Theo Epstein is the Cubs new GM or some other similar title for 5 years and 15 million dollars. Can he actually win in Chicago? With the Cubs?

I say no.

If they allow him to spend like a mad man, then maybe.

He did a good job of getting the Red Sox farm system back on track, I think that gets lost a lot, sure the Red Sox spend the 2nd most amount of money but if you look at their roster most of their best players came from the farm.

They definitely can. If it's "win now/soon" it will be due to spending a whole lotta money.

Wonder who the sox will get

Probably try and steal the kid from Tampa...why not right?

Andrew Friedman. And that is my prediction.

As far as winning...time will. I personally think that theo is kind of overrated. His talents lie in drafting and player development. He's handed out some pretty bad contracts and that trend will only continue with the cubs. As a cards fan I hope to see that continue. One thing is for sure tho, cubs fans will see a vast improvement in their farm system.

Apparently it will be Ben Cherington...he is the assistant GM for the Red Sox right now, if Theo leaves, it sounds like Ben is the next guy in line.

I personally think if Mark Cuban owned the Cubs this would be a no brainer. But I'm not convinced anyone can win the Series with the Cubs right now.

Friedman would only go to the Astros, imo.

Cubs should do very well under Epstein. Ricketts is willing to spend money and Theo can build a farm system. It is on the thin side, but there are some solid pieces in the system now. Will be interesting to see if he can trade anyone of the 25 man to reload the system.

Yes, but not right away. It's going to take a few years. I don't think their farm system is that good and they don't have many trade chips at the ML level....a bunch of overpaid old veterans

Like Yanks said, it's going to take a few years. He can draft and build a farm system. There's no doubt about that. And that's exactly what Chicago needs right now. Their farm system is in shambles.

As a cards fan, how will you feel seeing Pujols in a Cubs uni next season?

If Pujols gets the kinda money he wanted at the start of the season, it wouldn't bug me if he went to the Cubs. Dump a bunch of money on a guy for 8 years when he'll only produce for another 4. That'll set the Cubs back.

i'd prolly be apathetic. I've already prepared myself for the loss. If he wants to paperchase...so be it. Let the next club bear the burden of that contract.

that's what I was kinda alluding to in my previous post about the cubs continuing to hand out ridiculous contracts.

I'm not sure I see them going after pujols though. I do however see them landing prince fielder, which would prolly be a wiser move.

Until he can get out from under the horendous contracts of Zambrano, Soriano, & Dempster he doesn't have much chance.

Zambrano only has 1 year left on his insane contract. I dont mind Dempsters contract he's been decent fir the cubs. Ramirez's 16 mill is also now off the books. The only bad thing is that Soriano still has 3 years left. Worst contract ever.

I agree about Fielder. Less money for more productive years.

Fielder has just about peaked. I just don't see him putting up that great of numbers much anymore.

He's only 28 I believe. I could see him putting up some good numbers over the next 4 years but I also a see a steep decline because of his body type.

Definitely not worth the amount of years he's gonna get.

But they usually aren't.

The first thing Epstein needs to to do is tell the owners that he's not spending big money for the next two years till they clear the books.
