Obama says he worries more about college players than those in the NFL because the pros have a union, are well-paid and are grown men.

"They can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies," Obama said of NFL players. "You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."

President Barack Obama not sure he'd allow a son to play football - ESPN

So long as these universities are receiving any federal funding (which they all are), the Federal Government has a legitimate interest in what goes on at said universities, to include impacts on student-athletes.

I'm pretty sure UT Football doesn't receive federal funding. There are only a handful of teams though that don't get outside funding

The University of Tennessee receives federal funding and the university subsidizes the AD. Both of those are indisputable facts; therefore, the Federal Government has standing.

I was just thinking that the Federal Government was doing such a lovely job in ruling this country that I want them to go ahead and take over college athletics while they are at it.

Basketball is a contact sport. Obama did not serve in the military, however, that does not necessarily entail that he would not fight for his country. Did you serve in combat? If not, do you think it would be absurd for me to say that you would not fight for your country?

They took over college athletics in 1972.

The University of Tennesse and the University of Tennessee Athletic Department are two seperate entities. The school is economically supported by the state and the feds as well and is non profit. The AD is self supporting and runs as a business having profits and losses.

Might want to do a bit of research before you go on a liberal tirade or it makes you look, lets just say less intelligent. Big O and his cast of idiots needs to worry more about unemployment, the increasing price of gas (which he campaigned to do in his first election), our debt, and our credit rating than trying to muscle in on our athletic department

It will start at the lower levels before CFB is threatened. I expect actual and/or the threat of lawsuits against marginally funded school districts will kill high school football first.

The AD had been subsidized by both the state and the school for at least the past decade.

From his quote, I was unaware these college players are not men and that people are forcing them to play this game.

something needs to be done about football. sending kids out of college with brain damage is just sad.
To me its easy. First of all, enforce existing rules every time. Second, have Non-team doctors on the sidelines and have a comprehensive standardized testing procedure. Third, after diagnosis a minimum respite is mandated with goals to ensure recovery has been attained. It cannot be achieved with team physicians.

Teddy Roosevelt set the precedent when he forced college football palyers to stop killing each other.

Football would be 100x less dangerous if players cared about their safety. Don't lead with the crown of the helmet, and football is relatively safe. You are taught good tackling form from an early age, but you see many players even at professional levels completely fail at it.

It's not surprising that players who stop wearing knee pads, mouth pieces, cups, etc.. wouldn't have the foresight to give a **** about long term brain damage.
