10/16,1982: A bright spot in a mediocre season, the host Volunteers end Alabama's 11 game streak in the series, defeating the Crimson Tide 35-28. It would be Bear Bryant's final season.

1/1/1986: The #2 ranked Miami Hurricanes complained loudly of their Sugar Bowl pairing with Tennessee. There was a cacophony of trash talk from Miami players, coaches, and fans. Thrilled to be returning to the Sugar Bowl, Vols fans showed up big, outnumbering Miami fans by a ratio of better than 2-1. Led by highly touted pro prospect, Vinny Testeverde, Miami scored first on a reception by Michael Irvin. That would be Miami's only score. In the second half, led by senior back-up QB and perennial bench-warmer, Daryl Dickey, Tennessee's offense would compile 35 unanswered points. The Vols defense dominated Miami, sacking and intercepting Testeverde six times in the process. Daryl Dickey would be declared Sugar Bowl MVP.

10/13/1990: In his inaugural year as HC at his alma mater, Steve Spurrier brings his nationally ranked, 5-0 Florida Gators to Neyland Stadium. Before 96,874 fans, the host Tennessee Volunteers hand their guests a psychologically scarring defeat, 45-3.

1/1/1996: In the Florida Citrus Bowl, UT would defeat tOSU, 20-14. Their only meeting on the gridiron.

1/4/1999: Undefeated SEC Champs, the Tennessee Volunteers won the first ever BCS Championship, beating FSU, 23-16.

10/23/1999: For decades, Tennessee had played Alabama in Knoxville and Birmingham. The Vols had last played at Tuscaloosa in 1930. This Saturday, they whipped the Tide 21-7 in front of the crimson-clad hometown crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

HEY! Coronavirus cranky, are we?

I posted a list of games which stand out in my memory. It was partial, not definitive. It was intended to prompt similar replies, thereby assembling a collective list. A FUN EXERCISE FOR ALL.

If I was to add a Notre Dame game, it would be 1991. Redemption of the orange britches.

Ah, yes. 1985, #1 ranked Auburn comes to Knoxville. Another everything-that-must-be-done performance by Tony Robinson coupled with inspired D holding Bo Jackson to 80 total yards. The Vols notch a dominant win.

I have been in the FF. I retreated to reel myself in. I was about to go full fire & brimstone. Don't confront me with hopeless couch-potato cynicism while we're in the midst of a pandemic. I have hope and will dismiss you like dog turds in some lazy neighbor's yard.
