I’m not sure why there has to be a discussion about motivation. The bottom line is they made a bad call live. (They **** the bed) made the announcement and moved on. They then watched the Jumbotron (illegal review) and changed their decision after the fact (not allowed within the rules, shiting the bed again) so in my mind you don’t ignore the rules to right a previous wrong. They’re still in the wrong and it sets a bad precedent to encourage fans to throw **** on the field. For the record, I never believed that. I said don't review something that is non-reviewable by watching the jumbotron. Coaches can be flagged for insisting the refs look at it to make a decision.
I like this, but the obvious problem is who’s going to be this “independent party”? And why will schools (or conferences) use them?
The logical initial thought would be NCAA-level, but they already put their thumb on the scales, and they’re on their way out anyway.
I’m having a hard time visualizing Fred’s Referees ‘R’ Us as a, what, participant? vendor? in this process.
I completely agree! I’m just (temporarily) stuck on the implementation of the independent referee source, pool, evaluators, and so on. Doesn’t mean that it can’t or shouldn’t be done.Obviously my vision is Polly-annish but we need to move towards a solution that is transparent, rewards performance, independent, and leverages technology. The professional leagues (MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA) all have adopted bits and pieces of those 4 criteria but by in large, college officiating really hasnt...
Last night, Etienne on Georgia had a run late. Clearly he got a first down. The refs spotted him short but there was no clear sideline shot that could overturn it. We had it with a Nico run last week. The biggest games in the biggest college league doesnt have the viewpoints that a run of the mill Titans vs Jags NFL game has...
We should strive for the best we can get and not settle because its been done that way in the past. The money needed is a drop in the bucket for what the SEC makes...
