That some of our fans can turn what happened last night into a positive for pruitt, man, somebody gotta say something about that. I feel a thread coming on soon, by me most likely, letting everyone know ( imo ) that would have been a beat down even if Pruitt was still their defensive coordinator. Saban has ALWAYS struggled defensively when Clemson has a QB that can run and pass with a measure of effectiveness.. see Watson and Lawrence title game stats and points for evidence..
Guess what? Whenever we faced a QB with a little ability in both areas, our defense usually got boat raced..looked a lot like bama's D actually...man, against the spread ( with a QB that has a pulse ), you gotta be able to contain ( I didn't say stop it ) the run with 8 ( leaving 1 defender deep middle;free / a safety valve ), and those same lbs and dbs ( on the field ) have to be able to cover in man to man decently. They can't be getting smoked by 5 yards on routes, gotta at least make the QB have to make an accurate throw. Now, that's if you play man. There is also the zone option, as far as coverage goes ( still playing the run with all gaps covered and 1 single deep safety ), which should be utilized if you can't hold up in man to man. You gotta do something defensively, whether zone or man, to force the QB to go through more than 1 read and make either an accurate throw, or make a throw with a pass rush nipping at him...but you gotta make him go through at least 2 to 3 reads... something I thought we didn't do a very good job of last year defensively
