in the rankings, its amazing where we stand right now. With a team that is probably in the bottom 5 in our history, the staff is still getting the attention from the kids across the country. Yeah, NSD is still 4 months away, but Vol nation, as a whole, should be proud of the current recruiting state of affairs. Keep digging fellas!

I'm liking the way this class is shaping up so far. Definitely a far cry from what we started with this year.

Noticed you're in HI, have you seen Juda Parker play?

I thought I saw an article on GoVols.com 2 - 3 weeks ago that indicated Juda decomitted from us, but never saw any discussion Volnation or Volquest. Think that was another unfounded rumor?

:eek:lol: Go to his thread. The staff asked him to look around.

24th is not that great considering that its not that high in the SEC. I understand that it may take a year or two to land a top 10 class but that's where we need to be to compete

Just out of curiosity does any one know what Saban's first class at LSU was ranked? Thats a decent barometer for us. It was before Saban became a house hold name and it was a rebuilding project at the time.

I know everyone says we are behind the other SEC schools but as it stands our class isnt that bad when you consider we are stock piling linemen. Its hard for those guys to get that fourth star. A 3* ol or dl is a quality pick up in most cases.

We'll get there.

Nah. The gradations just aren't that big. Busts are our current problem (along with one exceptionally poor class).

Rivals had Saban's 2000 class ranked as the 27th class after him being on the job for 2 months.

His 2001 class was ranked at #4 and included Joseph Addai, Michael Clayton, Marquise Hill, and Marcus Spears.

Get ready. Here comes Dooley/Saban comparison #8,382,084.

The 2nd recruiting year, or first full year (like Dooley's this year) of conference winning coaches:

Tuberville, 2000, 8th nationally, 4th SEC (Rivals)
Saban, LSU, 2001, 4th nationally, 1st SEC (Rivals)
Richt, Georgia, 2002, 3rd nationally, 2nd SEC (Rivals)
Meyer, Florida, 2006, 2nd nationally, 1st SEC (Rivals)
Miles, LSU, 2006, 7th nationally, 3rd SEC (Rivals)
Saban, Alabama, 2007, 1st nationally, 1st SEC (Rivals)

Auburn, currently in competition for the SEC title,
Chzik, Auburn, 2010, 4th nationally, 2nd SEC (Rivals)

Some predecessors SEC title-winning-to-be early classes...
Fulmer, Tennessee, 1994, 1st nationally, 1st SEC
Spurrier, Florida, 1992, 1st nationally, 1st SEC

What they don't have in common is celebrating recruiting classes in the bottom half of the SEC and outside the top 10 as some sort of harbinger of great future success.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting and informative.

I know saying this is probably going to make some people jump all over me. But reading this and the future success all these coaches went on to just pisses me off all over again when I think about how we would of been top 5 in the country and top 3 in the SEC last year.

I asked someone else this question in another thread and I'll ask you here...

If we landed outside the top 10 but inside the top 15 and we're 7th in the SEC but within 3-5 spots of 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th in the SEC will you honestly believe that those teams distanced themselves from us with this class?

From the question, how did new coaches do in their first full year, the programs situation at the time of takeover needs to be considered. Can't just automatically pull up first full years recruiting and compare to Dooley.

Yes, and it'd be even worse than the rankings suggest.

Likely # of 4/5* Recruits for 2011 in SEC
Alabama - 18
Florida - 14
LSU - 12
Georgia - 10
Auburn - 9
Tennessee - 4

So, we'd have to have the same recruiting class for 4 straight years and prohibit Alabama from recruiting a single 4/5* player merely to get close to even.

Would much rather have a talented 3* who stays in school and works hard instead of a 5* who is a bust (Chris Donald) or a 4* (Nuke and Darren Myles) who can't even stay in school. Its all about how well can our staff develop the talent we get.

Florida on probation pre-Spurrier and without an SEC title appearance under Zook.

LSU off back-to-back bad losing seasons before Saban; Miles did inherit Saban's team.

Georgia had Donnan's talent but had not appeared in the SEC title game once.

Alabama had all of 2 NFL draft picks on their upperclassmen roster, likely worse than us.

Auburn was coming off some down years at the end of Bowden's tenure pre-Tuberville & had fewer players on scholarship when Chizik started than we did or do post-Tuberville.

No program has a winning record in conference play this decade with that modus operandi.

yea, but it is how you build a program the right way. Look at the # of arrest in FLA and GA and how much they are dealing with and they are still losing with 4*/5* guys. Some kids have baggage yes, but to establish a PROGRAM it has to be done the right way.

None of those teams had the coaching turnover we've had over the past three years. The deck is firmly stacked against Dooley.

IF UT is top 15 (as my question suggested) then you can believe they'll have at least 10 4*'s if not more...that would put them basically even with the last 4 on your list...

Is there a substantial difference in 1st or 2nd and 7th...yes...but that's another topic...

My point is the difference between 3rd and 7th in SEC recruiting will be minimal...and that difference will be based on the subjective opinion of a group of guys who have mostly never played college football in their lives...

Yet there's a large number of posters who believe that if we're not top 10 overall and top 6 in the SEC that we're doomed...as if the difference between being 6th and 7th in the SEC is a clear indication that this class is worthless...

That's just an illogical opinion....IMO
