It was a flop. Pure and simple. I think that the ref was embarrassed by the call when he reviewed it on the monitor. He couldn't take it back, but he surly wasn't going to get fooled again. Hence, very few flopping calls after that. So, how come when the hand is considered a part of the ball, no foul is called when the hand is hit on a shot, but is a clean block? Don’t buy it. I think the refs thought the kid got knocked down by an elbow and could not undo the foul on review.
That’s the most annoying part of all the “dirty play/flagrant foul” BS. Any play that could have even been remotely flagrant was reviewed (including Vescovi barely brushing a guy’s face with the BASKETBALL) and deemed not flagrant. It seems if they were “missing stuff” in a high profile game like this they would have been reamed at halftime by their superiors and turned “whistle happy”. That didn’t happen. Like many on here have said, they probably looked at all the replays and were embarrassed by the flopping and said “fool me once…..” and quit falling for it.IMO Barnes really needs to call out Bilas & Co along with any other media whining about our physical play. He should counter the BS that crew spewed and get some national airplay himself defending the officiating as much as his team. Reiterate not one intentional foul was called—several were reviewed—and nor should there have been. Also remind that Aidoo’s elbow to Filipowski was correctly deemed as a basketball play—the absolute correct call.
Whether in his personality or not, I hope Barnes does this at the press conf in NYC. He needs to be psychological about this or the officiating will be ticky tack as hell tomorrow night.
