WNBA discussion thread?

The Liberty does seem to pose some mighty match-up problems for the Aces. Stewarts ability to score from outside as well as in the paint does make her a much tougher cover than Wilson. Not sure getting Candace will make much difference.
The player from Oregon is tough as nails can't spell her name correctly 😉😉

Y!sports has predicted that Horston would be on the all-rookie team, which would be great
Boston predicted to be rookie MVP
No way Jordy's not all rookie. Good for her and good for our recruiting. Helps to have successful WNBA players.

Boston will be ROY, rightfully so. Diamond Miller and Dorka are also pretty sure to make all rookie. Not sure who else. Grace Berger actually had a really solid season. Zia Cooke was sort of up and down, but had some good games.

Jordy's swiss army knife ability made her really valuable to the rebuilding Storm. Still struggling with her shot and her shoulder, but so athletic and able to do so much. Best thing that happened all WNBA season was her going off in Atlanta w the coaches and teams there.

My fave WNBA players this season weren't the ones duking it out for MVP. I really like Collier, Jackie Young, and Jewell Loyd. Also Austin and EDD.

Here's a good Maria interview w Jordy and Mercedes.

She earned it, too. Next season I hope she'll be a more consistent scorer, but the other facets of her game were already impressive in year one. The staff and the fans out there seem to love her.
Scoring will come once she gets her shoulder repaired. Hard to have a strong shot /follow through when your shoulder keeps dislocating.

WNBA MVP-
Brianna Stewart over A'ia Wilson by 1 vote.
Obviously as a UConn fan I am happy for Stewie, but in my opinion neither one should have been the MVP.
All season long all you heard was about the two super players and the two super teams.
Stewie and A'ia were surrounded by other great players, so they may have still maintained their record even if these players were not playing.
My vote is for Alyssa Thomas of the Conn. Sun. She is not surrounded by super players, and when Brianna Jones went down with a season ending injury, Thomas had to take on the opponents' best player every night.
Her stats:
15.5 PPG
9.9 rebounds PG
7.9 Assists PG
1.8 steals per game.
In addition, she set WNBA season records with 316 assists (not even a guard), 27 double-doubles, 6 triple-doubles(no WNBA player has 6 triple-doubles in their entire career).
She is the first WNBA player to get 600 pts, 300 rebounds, and 300 assists in one year. If she was missing, the Sun would have had a hard time making the playoffs.
Tell me, what is the MVP award about? I think she was disrespected. She plays tough, so some people don't like her, but let's have some integrity here.

Tell me, what is the MVP award about?
That's always the problem. Some lazy voters simply award best player on best team. Or a crazy big scorer. Rarely has to do with the player who was actually most valuable to their team. Thomas would have a strong argument for that. So do N Collier and Jewell Loyd.
Stewart's award was from the AP and was for MOP, not WNBA MVP.
A small but distinct difference.
Again, it's always fuzzy what's actually being rewarded. Most outstanding play probably does come down to Stewie and Wilson, but most valuable is different.

All I know is if Wilson isn't voted MVP, a certain group of scarily obsessed South Carolina/WNBA fans are going to have a total come apart. They had a meltdown over Bree Beal being cut, can't wait to see this one!

The MVP should be Alyssa Thomas of the Sun.... individuals say look at the stats...I say take the person off the team then see the results....Thomas is definitely more valuable to Connecticut than Wilson is to Vegas or Stewart to The Liberty....take Wilson off Vegas you still have a 30 win team same for Liberty without Stewart...take Thomas off Connecticut then see what happens....true meaning of MVP...

Why are they off days in WNBA playoffs. 2 games Wednesday then game 2 of those series are on Sunday.....the other 2 series opening games Friday then game 2 on Tuesday...thought WNBA wanted to be different from NBA....this format has NBA playoffs written all over it...with only half the number of playoff teams...🤨

Yeah it seems like almost everything they do schedule and tv wise is counter intutitive and dumb. To be fair tho the W had it's best year in attendance and viewership so I guess dumb works. Actually I think everything they decide comes down to money and cutting costs. Still a very $ strapped league. Yet players want more teams, more roster spots and charter travel.

and they should
Better to make the average WNBA salary $113,295 and stay stateside than to make double that and be half a world away

If the WNBA ever starts treating itself like a business instead of letting the NBA treat it like a possession,,,it WILL take off

By all measures, this season was a big success for WNBA--ratings, game attendance, social media engagement all took big jumps. I think the super team vs. super team hype was a really good marketing move (very sad that CP3 is missing out due to her injury). And they moved to a 40 game schedule, which makes the regular season feel more more like an actual league competition rather than Summer time replacement show for the NBA.

The previous post complaining about "rest days" is a little vague. I am guessing the intended point was that the WNBA should stagger playoff games, so that there are not two on the same night. I would agree that sentiment but, in that case, the problem would not be "rest days" but scheduling./
