I did not watch the game last night, but would like to here what others think of Worley's throwing mechanics. Perhaps it's just from the few highlights I watched, but I couldn't help but feel like he displayed some strange throwing habits and is showing signs of consistently being behind the receivers. His pass to Jonathan Johnson looked really good, but all the others I saw seemed to look a little off. How did he look to those that watched the game?

Well, pardon me. I figured some might be interested in a discussion or an evaluation of our starting quarterback, especially for those who were unable to watch the game on Saturday.

No, that was a terrible throw. He underthrew it so bad that Johnson had to stop running to get it. It should have been a touchdown.

There was nothing pretty about that throw.

More curious how he does when under pressure, which Oregon will bring. You know they will stack against the run which will put pressure on Worley to make good decisions in the passing game. His throwing mechanics are no where horrendous like Tebow's.

Maybe you should have read some of the threads started by those who did see the game yesterday and have presented their critique.

After re-watching it, you are definitely right. It could have been an easy TD with another 5 yards on it.

They are pretty bad. And he throws off his back foot, especially on the interception and on the one on the offsides call. I know he had a free play but still threw that one off his back foot too, which you can get away with you have a strong arm but his arm strength isnt very good. We havent had a QB start with a worse arm since Rick Clausen and they are pretty close in comparison. Really hope Peterman or Ferguson get shots soon.

Sorry you did not find this topic to be worthy of it's own thread. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Worley made some good throws. Receivers need to catch them

He also made some throws that were well behind his receivers. I really want Worley to do well, but he has to get a bit better at leading receivers or every secondary we face from here on out will jump all over those short balls.

I actually commented on this yesterday at the game. He has a very long windup and a slower release than I'm sure his coach would like. I don't know if it affects his accuracy, but it affects the amount of time the ball gets out of his hand which allows defenders to react faster. It's almost as if he starts with the ball by his side, pulls it back and releases rather than starting with the ball already back and just releasing.

He makes good decisions (except for the pic), but his accuracy is not there yet. The receivers are constantly adjusting to the ball and most are under thrown.

I would agree his arm strength is questionable, his game IQ must be better than the back ups at this point. Looking at several games yesterday I'll be happy when we have a dual threat QB.

He doesn't seem to be setting his feet on most throws which hurts the accuracy.

He reminds me of Phillip Rivers with the weird sidearm throw with an over the top motion that just doesn't allow him to get much on the passes.

Rivers made it work with a much stronger arm and much much quicker release.

Nice kid, good game manager, but they are going to be exposed when they play a good defense.

IMHO, his biggest problem right now is holding the ball on deep routes. On the more automatic routes such as slants, he looks good, quick, decisive. It's when he has option routes or has to try to time up deep routes where he's having problems. Holding the ball too long. I really don't see bad mechanics issues ... just timing which leads to accuracy issues.

He has a big windup in his throw and brings it down near his hip. That will et stripped under pressure sooner or later.

He just looks like he's not fully comfortable yet. He actually had some good throws. He had one to Croom that was nice and Croom dropped it. He'll come along...but, it will take a little more time than we probably want.

The good news is that the Freshman are developing and adjusting to the speed of the college game.

I'm not taking anything away from Worley - he's was a very, very good HS QB. However his offer sheet is somewhat telling. For my beleaguered Vols (and fans), I hope he turns out great.

Maybe he has somewhat of a Tebow-esque throwing motion?
He's had some ups and downs but nevertheless we are winning. This isn't Worley's first rodeo, he was thrown in the heart of the fire when Bray hurt his pinky (2. LSU 1. Alabama 13. South Carolina and I think 8. Arkansas) and he played pretty well through it too. Go watch some of the 2011 highlights
Anyways, more mechanics work and chemistry with receivers should be enough to be successful.
Support Our Vols!!! That's what true fans are supposed to do!!!

I thought Worley would be good but he sucks passing the ball and Peterman dont look too good either.

I'm no expert but Worley appears to have a weird loop/wind up in his throwing motion. It seemed like a lot of his deep balls sailed and fluttered. The receivers didn't help him---I think the timing and the trust isn't quite there yet and that's a big cause for concern. I'd say if WKU's defense was an SEC level or of a high calibre they would have had at least a few interceptions. Worley has to improve.
