Worst Sports Talk

I moved to NC 3 years ago hated moving because i had been in Mid Tn all my life listening to Plaster. I enjoyed Plaster But Billy Packer son here in North Carolina is great nothing like Packer. The show is called the Pack Man show always dogging stupid SC fans and everyday on the radio he gives a day count for the last time the Cowboys won a playoff game its like 4000 days now. There are a ton of Cowboys fans here and i love it.

Primetime with the Packman is a pretty good show. It's very funny with some of the guys they have on there. A little too much ACC talk, but since it's in Charlotte, it's understandable.

They are not great but i've heard a lot worse. What do you think of the morning show on that same station?

I like the morning show better than Plasters......they have better topics and better guests plus they interact with the callers better...................and my buddy produces it.:rock2:

Also that is why I hated to see Conn and Brent leave on 1510 with Duncan. They were genuine fans talking sports and didn't care to give their honest opinions.

Much better than Plaster. It's quite a bit more informative. Like someone else said, they interact pretty well with the callers. The "put a sock in it" segment is hilarious.

Memphis had the best morning talk show with Geoff Calkins and Gary Parrish. But local ESPN 680 management screwed that up.

Plaster is not that bad. Mark Howard in the mornings is the worst of any I have ever heard.

Mark can get on my nerves but I can at least respect him. He is one of those old school hard core sports guys that knows facts on top of facts. Plaster is just a Nashville mouthpiece that adds nothing to the show except his infamous "book it" line, which makes me want to punch him.

I thought ESPN was on 730. Is the Parrish/ Caulkins experiment crashed and burned? :dunno: Don't listen to them.

You are correct - ESPN is 730.

Rumor has it that Calkins/Parrish wanted more money and ESPN wouldn't pony up. So they left and are waiting for the non-compete to lapse and they will get a slot at Fox 680.

Well, that's better anyway since the Vol Network is on 680... :clapping:

I think the morning hours had a large part to do with it. Neither really wanted to work mornings. If they do go to Fox, look for an afternoon show. Which sucks because they would be going head to head with Chris. Not sure how that would work with their friendships, mainly Chris and Gary's.

I also talked to Geoff and he said there was no way wo "upgrade" the signal at ESPN as the tower is limiting them and it is doing all it can. Chris kind of made it sound like it could be improved. Geoff seemed somewhat frustrated with that as well.

I really hate that Gary can't come on with Chris as they were pretty good together during the 4:00 hour.

Best Sports radio: I dont have range to sirius or XM so this middle TN based
Top 5

1. The 1st shift on Fox from 5am to 6am is my favorite...(thanks 104.5 the zone for dropping my favorite)
2. The Dan Patrick Show
3. Big Orange Sunday
4. Fox 3rd shift
5. JT the Brick

worst sports talk radio
Fox 3rd shift
so that leaves JT the brick's show somewhere or something worse than the 3rd shift

Having just moved to Arkansas and listening to the premiere sports talk here, well, it's a trip. This has to be the worst sports talk in the country. they have this guy named Randy Rainwater (no joke) and he sounds as though he never stepped foot in a classroom.

Find Bo Mattingly, in the afternoon, he comes on either at 1:00 or 2:00 on 96.3 or 1190 am

On Tuesday, he has Otis Kirk (recruting writer for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette).. Otis talks like he has a mouth full of rocks, and makes Rainwater sound like a Harvard grad

Bo's a former Sports anchor for one of the NWA TV stations, that moved to Radio, he's usually tolerable

Lexington, KY has got to be the worse. I can think of three that pop into my mind - Dick Gabriel, Drew Deener, and Chris Cross. All thee are huge UK homers. I'm sure LexVol can attest to these.

I'm not a Deener or Cross fan, but Gabriel is an informed, very capable journalist. He also works for the flagship station for UK sports. What did you expect? Orange love? Not going to happen.

I would expect Gabriel to come down on the coaches and players when needed instead of the usual, SEC Champs, final4, and NCAA Championship predictions.

When fans want to talk about their displeasure with the team, he quickly interrupts them and moves on to the next caller. I guess working for the flagship station has it's stipulations.

If you ever get the chance, call Deener and ask him for a tennis lesson and then get him to tell you about how he created his major at Transy!

The sports talk in Knoxville can be bad, but to be honest hearing about the Vols (even if the guys talking about them are sort of goofy) is much better than hearing about some other team from goofy sports talk guys. I lived in Orlando for two years, and to be honest, I hated their sports talk way more than I hated the guys in Knoxville. Jerry O'Neal can go die a very slow death, and on the weekends the only option I even had was listening to a fishing show.

Ol Plasty is a Belmont man at heart. Willie Donnick is the good Nashville guy

I believe this is the first/last time we will hear of anyone's Belmont bias on VolNation.

But no...Plaster is a gigantic Vandy homer...Willy Daunic actually is, too, but does a better job of hiding it...

I mean, remember Plaster used to be Vandy's play-by-play guy until they told him he'd have to quit over at 99.7 (which is where he was at the time).

Actually, pretty much all of 104.5 except Willy and Darren annoy me. I'm a huge Predators fan...104.5 is their flagship station...and they do everything they can to avoid talking hockey. I mean...they will interrupt the Bristol race to talk high school football on a Friday night at 8:30...which is an hour before most of the games are over...so I don't know who it is marketed to.

Are we Texas? No one in Tennessee cares about high school football other than their own team...at least not enough to listen to it on the radio. Heck, my alma mater has games that get broadcast on 104.5...

104.5 can't really decide who its target audience is...and it irks me.
