This ten minute stretch second half from 11:53 to 1:53 may be the worst ten minutes during the second half offensively I ever remember ( I am 74 years old)/ Read it and weep.
Tennessee total points 3 ( 4 foul shots, no field goals)

Texas Tech total points 3 ( 1 foul shot, one field goal- a dunk)

Totals - 20 minutes offensive production for both teams - 6 points.

In first half Tennessee at on point shot I think 2 for 27 or 6 %.

Texas Tech only scored 15 points in second half Tennessee 19.

Upcoming difficult games
12 22 21 : Arizona ( beat Michigan by 20 points) raked 11th
12 2921: at Alabama (beat Gonzaga ) ranked 9th
1 8 22: at LSU ( now 8 wins no losses) ranked 25th
1 15 22 at Kentucky (now 7-1) ranked 10th

Pray for them Vols !!! Sterling

UNC also beat Michigan by a decent score. These other teams also don’t play as well on defense as Texas Tech. It was a rough night, but they will be better.

Very strange game. I don't believe I have ever seen a game where no one that played could shoot the ball, They couldn't make 3's, layups, foul shots. I have never seen that before. Yes its was butt ugly. Only reason I didn't turn it off was that TT was shooting as badly as Vols and they still have a chance to win it.

Two things I take away from this effort.
1. The team as a whole looked tired. The were slow and just couldn't seem to jump at all. Shooting was off, timing and accuracy. I wonder (no I think) these things had to do with the extreme effort effect and "lighter air" effect on the travel and performance on the ball from their Colo. game.
2. On the brighter side, all this being said, the defensive job was outstanding. TT is not a bad team and they do score much better than this game showed. I take away that this team can play pretty good defense when they have to.

Why so reasonable? You mean the season isn't over? ;) GBO!

Agree on #2. Lost in all the Nega posts is the fact that this was a very good defensive performance. It would have been a big time blowout if not for their D. They play that way all season a lot of wins will come.

Pffttt....what are you, 20ish? UT has plenty of stinkers over the years. Don't get too worked up. Not the end of the season. Long way to go. We will be fine. Its not how you start but how you finish. I want our best ball to be played come march.

Flush this one and move on to the next one, Coach Barnes can't shoot it for them!

Good to know our defense can cover for us when we have a bad (epically bad) shooting night - the play that epitomized the night for me was open-court lay-up/dunk (whatever the hell it was) attempt by JJJ.

GBO!!!

Obviously never saw games in the era when UT spent many (not all) years wandering in the basketball wilderness.

As bad as we were, offensively, TTU scored one basket in the final 12 minutes of regulation…a bogus goal-tending call, at that, by Vescovi on a missed dunk attempt by TTU…and WON THE GAME.

And it isn’t like they had a massive cushion to support their offensive ineptitude, either. With 12:03 remaining, they scored to make it 38-33. They nursed a 5-point lead for 12 minutes without making a single basket on their own, and managed to win.

The more I stew over it, the more unbelievable it really seems. Like, that couldn’t happen again, if you gave both teams 100 opportunities and blindfolded them.

I told my spouse the same thing, like this is a nightmare and I woke up and said “you’re not going to believe what I dreamed.”

Just tag this game in your memory banks. For one day many years from now, UT will once again have unimaginable difficulty getting that bouncy thing to go thru that hoopsie thing, and no doubt in that day many fans will say it's the worst offense thats ever been! You can then respond "not so fast little grasshopper" " I once witnessed far worse, then you can puff on your pipe and tell this games story.

And wasn’t that dunk an incorrect goaltending call for Texas Tech?
It’s funny because I don’t think they ever showed an up-close replay, just a replay from the opposite end. The announcers even said they didn’t agree. Let‘s not even talk about Tennessee collecting 10 more fouls in a low-foul game.

Last night was awful, but you really don't have to go back that far to find one even worse... Under Cuonzo, 8 years ago, we lost a brickfest to Georgetown 37-36.

It looks like this team is going to run hot and cold all season. This probably isn't the last game we have seen at the brickyard.

Seriously, what will it take to make the necessary changes where you don't have to see Pat Adams and Doug Sirmons ever again? I seriously wonder what is said behind closed doors while coaches watch film and whether they privately complain. The charge call on Chandler was absolutely pathetic and an easy call from behind.

JMO, but TT was determined to make us shoot from three.
They collapsed bigtime ... anytime the ball got into the block either by dribble or pass.
Fulky has a problem with his shooting hand ... and frankly when we did get it to him in position to score ... he missed.
In the second game, Villanova shot 26% from 3 ... 13-50. (And they won 63-57)
So, maybe it was the combination of the ball, the floor, and the sightlines.

I thought the guy just flat out missed it watching it live. I didn’t see any contact with the basket. I know we complain about the refs every game and basketball is the hardest game to officiate but that was a horrible display of officiating last night. That was two points. The bogus charge on Chandler took 2 or 3 points away potentially. That may have contributed to the insanely high amount of 3pt attempts due to the inconsistency in calls and foul trouble.

Yes, all your points are spot-on. That phantom call on Vescovi and the early call against Chandler were potential game-changers.

Season is still early. These guys are trying to gel together. Gotta find an identity. They very well can come out the next game and drain 16 3’s….be on fire. They had a big outing at Colorado. They got caught up in playing Texas Tech’s game. Still a long season guys step back from the ledge.

The goaltending call on Vescovi was pretty bad, too. His hand hit the net but he didn’t enter the cylinder and he didn’t grab the net causing a jarring of the rim. His hand hit the net before the ball hit the rim. Just an awful call that ought to be reviewable.

The troubling thing is that these are considered to be the best in the game, working at the highest level. How is that possible? And I know it’s tough. Hardest sport to officiate, by far. I’ve done it and don’t want to ever again. It almost begs the question as to whether they need a 4th official in games. There is just way too much for 3 people to monitor and make snap decisions on.

Last night's game was a defensive masterpiece by both teams and it would have made James Naismith proud.

Sometimes I feel like it would be 4 clowns instead of 3.
