This all day long. Three and outs will kill a defense with little depth. Did everyone read how many plays AJ and Sapp were on the field for? The corners? Too many people get caught up on stats and have no wholistic view of a game.

Exactly. Those two guys should never have to play that much. I LOVE the direction of our defense. I've been rather impressed. A defensive ranking certainly doesn't tell the story, IMO.

I GUESS ITS BETTER THAN SALS DEFENCE LAST YEAR, but one thing is that most of the same players and cant get off the field on third down and no dept. other than that we got a good D.

Why everyone is so down on the VOL's defense? IMO they really haven't played that badly.

If you watch the games, they have held their own pretty well given the circumstances dealt to them.

I believe that if they had an offense that could at least stay on the field more than 3 plays per series (sometime 1 play ie. fumbles and picks), we would see the defense in a whole different light.

I agree that they'd be better if they didn't spend the majority of the game on the field. Everyone is down on the defense because, while they seem to have improved, they're still a bottom of the SEC defense.

So far the defense looks improved over last year. If we get just totally boat raced from now until the Kentucky game much like last year, then i will have to change my mind. Only time will tell.

I'm thinking the same thing.

Through 5 games this year, we're giving up 12 yards less than last year, and have 3-4 more turnovers. (First 5 last year may have been tougher than this year).

I Agree our defense has kept us in games if we had a offense to match I think we would be 4-1..

We will see. You may be right, but I don't see it. This defense looks bad because they spend so much time on the field. Western Kentucky and South Alabama both put up big numbers in the second half. That wouldn't happen if we could keep the offense on the field. The offense will only get better.

An offense can put up decent numbers of they're given ample opportunities to do so.

Dang your full of excuses in every post . I wondered why and then I noticed your username

What are they if you take out Oregon? Oregon would make 95% of all FBS teams look silly and hurt their defensive rankings. That's a short-sighted argument, IMO.

Edit: just looked it up. Tennessee's defense would rank 35th without the Oregon game.

well heck...if you take out every game they rank #1.

Our defense is on the field way more than they should due to sloppy quarterback play that being said of course we will give up yards and plays.

The bottom line is the D has to get themselves off the field on 3rd down. Sure the offense hasn't helped a lot, but opponents 3rd down conversions are way, way, way too high. All in all the D is only ever so slightly better than last season thus far.

If you know anything about statistics, which everyone is so happy to use against this defense, you know that you disregard outliers. Oregon is averaging almost 700 yards a game and had about that against us. That's almost 300 more yards than what we are giving up per game. That's what makes the Oregon game removable.

Considering they are ranked 80th for allowing 410 yards per game, yes, absolutely. For them not to improve they would have to allow at least 410 yards over the next three games. Do you think that'll happen?

Well consider this: WKU put up 393 yards on us and USA put up 393 yards. Considering our next 3 opponents are UGA, USc, Alabama and those teams have vastly better offenses, yes it could easily happen.

You don't think 2 of our next 3 opponents cannot put 500 yards on us?

I didn't say they can't, I just don't think they will. I also said I could be wrong, but we'll see. Without Oregon, we have about the 50th best defense in the country. It's not incredible, but the fact remains that our defense isn't the real issue here.
