Would we still want him after what we’ve seen?

I always found it comical that the Grudenites just assumed he'd be an incredible college recruiter. Whatever celebrity appeal he had from MNF would wear off rather quickly. Most 17 and 18 year old kids today have no memory of his Raiders/early Tampa days (the only notably successful part of his head coaching career, BTW) and it seems reasonable they might have viewed him as a gimmicky, washed up ex-coach who played a football coach on TV.

I think many were mistaking their own fascination with him and thinking kids out of high school would feel the same. Kind of like how people thought he is some QB guru because he had a segment on ESPN about QBs.

Jon Gruden and the Raiders are a train wreck
The biggest hype on this chat room this off season was the Jon Gruden hype. A lot of us(including myself) thought this was an actual possibility, and the thought of it got me hyped! I can Speak for everyone, but for me I thought getting Gruden would be like our own version of Nick Saban. Imagining the 5 star recruits clamoring to get in Tennessee to play for Chuckey was very excited. Thinking we were going to have a super bowl winning, quarterback guru, and offensive genius got me excited! Just the hype by itself would’ve surely brought in top recruiting classes. But by looking at the Raiders from last year till now has me thinking we might have dodged another train wreck! If Gruden was here I dont feel he would be recruiting like Pruitt, and now don’t think we would be any better.(maybe even worse) Pruitt comes across as the real deal of a coach. I know It’s hard to be optimistic about him right now, but all I see is good, despite the offensive struggles this year. I know you can look at it very negatively with our current record and performance again the hated Gators. But I truly feel we finally have a coach. A true football coach who WILL right this ship. He will turn out better then Mullen or Gruden would have. It’s hard to see right now, but at the same time not really. Open your eyes Vol fans! We are on our way back, just compare the attitude of the team from this time last year to now. I made this post for fun and wanted to see what y’all thought about it. Would you guys take Gruden if we could do it over and he agreed to come? Or did everything Finally work out the way it’s supposed to for us? You got my opinion. I’m sure some will disagree(flame away)

This is where I stand on Gruden. After this last coaching hire I never want to hear his name brought up again. I used to like the guy now I hope he never wins a game, not because he didn’t chose to coach here but because he strung us along the whole time and gave fans and possibly the University false hope. I don’t have a clue what went on behind the scenes but you can’t tell me he could not have just come out and said he wasn’t interested in the job at some point, I’m pretty sure he never had any intention of coaching here so why play along a little bit and give a bit of a false sense of hope? Once we were strung along and had even the slightest hope that he might would come here anyone else was going to be a letdown. On top of that if he strung the admin along then that makes it worse because by the time he finally turned it down they didn’t have a suitable backup candidate... now again I have no idea what went on behind the scenes but at the very least he seemed content with toying with the fanbase instead of just squashing the rumors. If he had any love for UT at all he would not have done this because it wasn’t in the programs best interest. In my opinion he is an attention whore and screw him.

I wanted Gruden but I had my doubts that he would come to Tennessee and put up with the Haslams.
I don't think he'd want to put up with anything about the job that was unique to college football. Recruiting, the coach's show, the other required public appearances, the boosters other than the Haslams, needing to be a quasi-political figure in the state in addition to coaching, etc.

Gruden just wants to coach. Ironically, the guy we hired just wants to coach too. I don't think he enjoys the other stuff either, other than recruiting.

I think he trolled UT to keep his name out there. It got him a lot of additional publicity at the expense of our fanbase. I have no doubt he knew what he was doing and he did us dirty.

It's a good thing the Raiders suck under his vision and leadership. The one ring he does have was with Dungy's players and possibly a lot of his scheme work. I gotta admit, not many can take that meager resume and draw the respect and cash he's been able to pull down.

Oh, I don't know, I bet if you backed into a Superbowl win people would take notice.

Even if he did, which I don't believe he did, it's not his fault we have a ton of naive fans.

I honestly wasn’t hyped on him like most were. If he ended up our coach back then I would’ve felt about the same as when we got Pruitt. He was too big of a question mark to put all the hype behind. He has never coached a college team and it had been a decade or darn near since he was a coach at all.
The game has changed and while he has seen it happen in the booth, would he be able to put all that knowledge together on the field?
His actions in Oakland have made me VERY GRATEFUL that we didn’t get him. He would’ve run Kirkland out the door and probably a few other current starters and not cared about going 3-9 this year and not making a bowl next cause he would say He’s had to rebuild from nothing like he’s trying to do in Oakland.

honestly I don't think the recruits would have been anywhere near as excited to play for Gruden as our fan base believes. And I can tell you that other team's fans wanted us to hire him, because they weren't worried.

any comparison to Saban is lost unless the NFL coach already has a national title before coming to coach for us. Pete Carrol would be the only example I can think of. at least among active coaches.
I disagree with this. He wouldn't have had to leave his desk to pull recruits.

As for what's going on in Oakland I have no idea but aren't we going to hive him a few years? Do we expect him to come straight in and go undefeated?

That whole Beaver thing was hilarious. That was the most obvious troll job I have ever seen. I could not believe anybody took that seriously.

Man he had all 3 major Vol boards marching to his beat. That was just downright impressive.

To be fair we all trust AtlantaVOL and Atlanta verified some of MITBeaver’s credentials (or at least verified that he was a member of the same Golf and Country club as some connected people)

It’s as if I thought Beyoncé and Jennifer Anniston were both interested in dating me, because neither one ever came out and said they weren’t interested in dating me.
Yeah, that's exactly the same...
