Dooley leaves two SEC caliber QB's, two productive SEC RB's, plenty of talent and depth on both lines, and talent at both LB and DB though they are thin.

If Jones cannot build on the foundation he's been left then he won't deserve to be UT's HC in two or 3 years (depending on progress or lack thereof).

He more than likely won't be under that scenario.. This roster is in far better shape than when Dooley got here.. Not top talent 2 deep, but enough to compete and win some games with yes.. He should be able to get them to a bowl game next year.. Maybe even beat a team no one thought they would..

The defense needs to fixed--BADLY. You can't stop anybody, you don't win any games.

BTW, thinking back on Jones' O at Cincy, I am really not afraid of going forward without those guys. He runs a system sort of like Petrino and Leach do. Better athletes make the system run better but the system works even with somewhat lesser athletes.

I think he could make Neal, Lane, and Watson shine.

This is where Vol fans are going to have to be patient. You're going from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Different mindset. The good news is that the Vol D didn't embrace the former. Bad news is unlearning all of that. The Vol D won't be much better, if any, in '13. So you'll have to score a lot of points to win. Won't be easy with the schedule you start with. If UT is at .500 by the end of the season, fans should consider that a good thing. A bowl would be a big victory. That's when the real rebuilding begins, IMHO. :hi:

Good article considering the source.

Jone definitely has a better hand than Dooley did... and a better resume. Next season will be rough, 6-6 at least IMO, but the worst days *should* be over.

If you don't believe Steele's article or think it was rushed, then find a copy of his preseason magazine from this year and see what he had to say about us. Steele has been very realistic about our program's condition over the past 6 years. When we were all predicting UT to contend in the SEC east, he only predicted an 8-win season for us. He predicted us to only finish ahead of UK, Vandy, and Mizzou. Those predictions came when D. Rogers was still on the team. I don't think anyone, even Steele, predicted how bad our coaching was going to be this year.

If Steele thinks Jones may have us back in SEC East contention by 2014 then I believe him, he's usually good for it.

6-6 should be considered good. We might not be far from that next season, losing up to 12 starters on D. We're gonna have to be a lot like UT, score a lot of points to be competitive. Jones is going to have a slow start in recruiting. A couple of winning seasons should remedy that.
