WR Depth Chart???

Emmanuel Mosely said that if he was not the fastest on the team, there were 3 others that were. One of those other 3 was Josh Smith. Mosely is a legit 4.3 guy. Smith has been timed at 4.49, but his football speed seems faster than that.

So yeah, he can flat fly.

Moseley basically said Smith is "surprisingly fast for a white guy". That hardly means he "can flat fly". Again, perhaps the 4th fastest of our WR corps.....tops.

This is a deep group with varying sizes and skill. What I want to know is who is the burner of this group? A few years ago we had Hunter and Patterson that both ran sub 4.35 40"s at the NFL Combine. Is there anyone on this list with that kind of speed?

Uh no. Google is your friend. CP ran a 4.42
Hunter a 4.44.

That's not at all what Mosely said. Did you watch the interview?

Sure, he may have been exaggerating about Smith's speed, but our fastest player is obviously impressed by Smith. He called him top 5 on the team.

Yes, I read his quote. Said he was really surprised by how fast Josh Smith is. Everybody knows what he meant. Smith is NOT faster than North, Malone, Hurd, Moseley, Malik Foreman, Vic Wharton, Michael Williams, .......

Calm down bro. You only have seen short vids of practice. That doesn't make you an expert. He's a frosh so give him a break. Lot to learn, lots of pressure from pubes like you, and did I mention he's a rook. Give him time and let the game slow down for him.

I'm not going by short vids of practice. Im going by coach Jones comments as well as media comments. And im obviously not the only one who feels this way. On rivals someone started a blog sayin ''what the hells wrong with Malone''

Does not mean they are right on the rivals site. What I said cannot be disputed. He's a frosh that maybe overwhelmed. Nothing to see here.

Flat fly?? That why he was virtually not recruited coming out of Christian Academy? 3 offers... UT, Arkansas and Cincinnati. What's he a high 4.4, low 4.5 guy? He himself has said he knows why he's at UT.... as a white WR he's supposed to run good routes and catch everything thrown to him because he's not a burner. I said he's maybe the 4th fastest WR.... behind North, Malone and Wharton. Hell, I'll throw in Jenkins, Pearson and Pig while I'm at it.

Man where have you been the past year? Most people weren't familiar with Josh Smith until training camp last year. That's when we began hearing that virtually none of our dbacks could stay with the kid. Turn out, many other sec dbacks could either. He has incredible explosiveness. I know he had some drops but how could you deny the atheletism? So to directly reply to that list... Pig is not in the same stratosphere as Josh Smith based on pure speed, Jenkins, Malone, and Pearson have never taken a snap for UT. And although North is an amazing talent (and a better all around player imo) I don't think he is as fast as Josh Smith either. The kid is a baller. Reminds me of Zac Rogers... And not just because they were both white

I'm reading all this stuff about how he's made such a big transition, was hurt most of last year.....yada, yada, yada; but I ain't buying all that. Why? Cause it seems like we've been down this road before. They were saying the same exact things about him last year. That in PRACTICE, he was doing it all...running the best routes....had the best hands on the team, etc.

HHHHMMMM? There is some kind of disconnect here. Josh Malone gets no accolades for his work in practice, but he goes off on defenses when it's game time. Josh Smith gets all the hype for his practice work, yet on game day, he suddenly has bricks for hands.

I hope Smith gets it together, but again, I'm not going to be duped by hype from practice sessions again.

What are you basing that on? Malone hasn't "gone off on defense" in a college game yet......he hasn't played in a college game yet.

Well, I saw Josh Smith play last year. In which game exactly did he exhibit his "incredible explosiveness"? Maybe you should give me your definition of "incredible explosiveness". And do your homework chief before trying to call somebody out. North has been electronically timed at 4.41, where Josh was listed as a 4.5 guy. I haven't questioned Josh's "athleticism"....kid is a quick, fast athlete. I just do not believe, with good reason, that he's one of the 5-6 fastest players on the team and I've listed who I believe is faster. It's not a particularly big deal. He's fast, just not as fast as some other players.

Last night it was North, Smith, and Johnson (obviously not going to stay this way)

Smith has had an excellent camp thus far and wouldn't be shocked if hes the #3 WR.

From what I have gathered and what should be the start of the season

1. North
2. Pearson
3. Malone
4. Smith
5. Pig
6. Johnson
7-?? Croom, Jenkins (very good preseason camp), Gamble (walkon), Wharton, and Carter.

'New' Josh Smith turning heads for Tennessee Vols football

"Moseley said Smith is one the short list — three to five names — of this team’s fastest players."

-Rucker

You're at least wrong about what Moseley told reporters. So either you know more than a guy who practices against and conditions with our WR corps daily, Moseley is exaggerating, or Smith has legit speed now that both of his knees are healthy.

How was I wrong about what Moseley said? ...

Moseley said Smith is one the short list — three to five names — of this team’s fastest players.
“Josh Smith is fast — like very fast,” said Moseley, who might be the team’s fastest player. “That was surprising to me when I first got here. I was like, ‘Really?’ But, yeah, he’s fast. He’s a good player.”

He said he was surprised how fast Smith is. Again, we all know what he meant... he wasn't expecting a white kid to be that fast.

Last year, on our very slow team, Smith was described as being a 4.5 guy, and deceptively fast, yet never one of our fastest players. So now, after infusing the team with a ton of speed, absolute burners like Evan & Elliot Berry, D'Andre Payne, Josh Malone, Vic Wharton, Jalen Hurd, Gaulden, Pearson and Moseley to go along with Mike Williams, Malik Foreman, Marquez North and even Pig Howard, Smith is in the top 3 all of a sudden?

Perhaps I'm completely wrong but I just didn't see anything from Josh Smith that made me think he had elite speed last year. Was there an example of his speed that I'm just not recalling?

He himself has even said he understands why he was on the roster and it's because he's expected to run precise routes and catch the ball because he's not a burner.

Again, kid is fast, I just don't believe he's even in the top 10 fastest on the team. Could be completely wrong.

The fact that Smith was continually wide open against sec competition is proof of his explosiveness. You can continue debating it all you want but you're wrong on this issue. What he has not yet exhibited is the ability to continually make difficult catches, and I think people have allowed that to affect their opinions on him as an athlete. We just need to continue to support all of our players. Fans bashing them on message boards won't make them better (and iI'll say I do think we are better at this issue than many fan bases)

Getting open on a pass route doesn't prove "extreme explosiveness". We disagree there. And me saying "yes the kid is fast just not one of the 5-6 fastest players on the team" is not bashing him. It's just stating what I believe to be fact considering we're comparing him to Moseley, Mike Williams, Malik Foreman, Gaulden, Berry twins, Hurd, Wharton, Malone, North, etc.

We are loaded at WR (obviously)! How are we going to get the ball in all of these play makers hands?

How do you think our WR depth chart will pan out with guys such as: North, Pig, Malone, Croom, Pearson, Wharton, Smith, Johnson, and Carter?

It's not a bad problem to have, but only one of these guys are seniors (Carter) and we have Preston coming in next year as well...gotta like our talent on the outsides with the pigskin, assuming the QB's can get them the ball.

That answer is simple. Move them to DB!

How are you wrong about what he said? It's math.

"Smith is NOT faster than North, Malone, Hurd, Moseley, Malik Foreman, Vic Wharton, Michael Williams, ......." (That's 7 names)

Perhaps Moseley, while trying to compliment Smith, dealt in a little hyperbole? I'll stand by my comment that while he's fast, he's not as fast as any of the guys I listed.

I figure either he was exaggerating a bit, or he meant Smith makes the list in game speed, which can be very different from straight line 40 yard dash speed. Smith's route running ability could easily make him seem faster than 4.5 to DBs

Smith's a really talented kid and Coach Z does nothing but rave about him as though he believes he's the best of the group. Hope he can get his freshman yips issue cleaned up and has a great year.

I think teams that don't have a lot of depth in the secondary are gonna get schooled by the Vols receivers. We can run 9 or 10 guys in there and after a while gonna be hard for cornerbacks to keep up. This offense will be so explosive if our QB can get them the ball.
