WR recruiting

Tee chose Clemson, whether or not he sticks with them remains to be seen. If he does stick with them though we will be fine. Winning cures all ills my friends, and if we win like we should this season then it should attract more talent at the receiver position. That being said we already have a lot of talent from this past class, so losing out on tee definitely hurts, but not when you have guys like Marquez callaway, p-willy, Malone, Williams, etc. already at receiver. It helps that the best recruit in Tennessee is also at probably our deepest position. He's a special talent no doubt and he still may choose us, but we have a lot of weapons at receiver if he does stick with Clemson. Tyler Byrd will be a dynamic receiver for us along with callaway and Preston Williams. We will be fine, and many believe we will land holloman so I'm remaining optimistic here.

At the end of the day, the kid's gone. And I get the disappointment of losing so many instate kids. But it makes sense. We lose HJ because, frankly, he saw the writing on the wall with the QBs ahead of him here. We're absolutely stacked at QB for years to come. Dormady, JG, and somehow hung onto Jones too.

Rogers goes to Clemson. I don't recall a big push for him (or meltdown threads). But the kicker is he's buddy buddy with Higgins. Higgins follows Rogers. In my opinion, we've truly only lost one guy here (Higgins), and it's going to happen. We've won a lot of kids in years past that I have no idea how we pulled (e.g., Richmond, Kongbo). I'm sure Ole Miss felt gut punched on Richmond. He seemed so solid on them.

And what about the absolute raid we did on Miami's turf last cycle? We yanked 4* Tyler Byrd and 4* Carlin Fils-aime right from underneath their noses (not to mention Latrell Williams and Brandon Johnson). You know that hurt. I know they had the coaching change, but kids that grew up 2 hours away from their campus chose to go 12 hours north to Tennessee. It happens to everybody, we just got caught on the wrong end of it this time. We'll bounce back, Go Vols.

UT is now a run-first team, but isn't Auburn, LSU, and Ohio State? Oregon and Baylor run the ball a lot, even if you call them balanced.

The question is how come these programs can draw major talent at WR? Auburn has thrown for 300 yards in a game 3 times in the past 5 years.

Don't tell Dobbs4Heisman but UT is a running team because Dobbs isn't consistently accurate nor does he "throw receivers open" very well.

I expect UT to be a MUCH more balanced O when they have a QB that is effective in the passing game with great consistency. That could be Dobbs this fall.... or it could be his replacement next fall.

UT DOES have some live arms behind Dobbs who will fight for the job.

I pray that happens sooner rather than later. This offense can be explosive down the field with a passer under center.

UT is running team because we are really good at it, should we throw more to get a receiver who is in town???? NO, we need to do what we can to win! Dobbs is a running quarterback and that is where he is GREAT, let's use that and he more than capable arm along with Hurd and Kamara to get back to greatness, screw "a balanced attack..blah blah" bull****.

All of this talk about running, rotations, and blocking - this is our strength right now. The personnel changes next year with a change at QB and RB (maybe 2). We may move from 60/40 run this year to 60/40 pass next year. Our back up seems very accurate and could probably start for several D1 teams this year.

Clemson played in the playoff last year. They are a year or so ahead of us and a title contender. Our expectations are projections only. We beat Al, Fl, and Ga and the landscape looks different to recruits.

Intentionally getting the ball to P-Willy and Smith will go a long way toward changing perception. Dobbs also pulls it down and runs before exhausting his receiver options sometimes. That will change with QD and JG.

Unfortunately I could see why from a WR standpoint Higgins would choose Clemson over us. Unfortunately under Butch we have yet to really develop WR production. My next point is unrelated to Butch but our last two highly drafted WRs in CP and Hunter haven't really produced yet, however Clemson has had at least 3 WRs who have gone on to become #1 WR on their respective NFL teams. I'm just talking about recent success.

So from a pure WR standpoint I get it, however he lives in Oak Ridge 30 mins from Knoxville can't believe we lose out on him.

Typical homerism.......we lose a big recruit, so everybody cheats except us because we we're the only school with integrity in recruiting. Who are you kidding?

... I only said Auburn is dirty. Every school cheats, but some cheat more than others and Auburn is one of the worst. Also, I think Tee made the best decision based on his ability. How am I homer again?

We are ok with or without Tee. This is a verbal commit until February and untill then no use standing on the ledge. Here's my 2 cents.

Watson is being projected as a Heisman candidate and with that weak schedule I'm not doubting it. Tee wants to play with him which is understandable.

What Tee fails to realize is, if at years end he is still being recognized as a HC and has a good year he will forego his senior season and head to the NFL as Tee comes in as a freshman. Has Tee thought this out? Who's next in line for Clemson when Watson bolts?

I seriously doubt Tee expects to play with Watson. Deshaun is very likely to be the #1 overall pick next year, he's all but gone.

I believe Higgins is headed to Clemson because of their excellent recent WR and passing game track record. It's much better than ours, that's just the truth.

Also, Swain made what I thought was a great point this morning. Clemson was very likely bringing up Josh Malone during his recruitment. He said they were very likely saying "look at Malone right now at Tennessee....he listened to everybody and decided to stay in state and play for Tenessee and look where he is now, how's that worked out for him? He could've come to Clemson and played in the 10th rated passing offense in the country last year, with a heisman finalist QB, but instead he's at Tennessee where their passing offense is awful and where he spends more time blocking than anything else."

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Seriously, who cares if this kid committed elsewhere? This kid seems to be a DIVA!!! Let Dabo handle that headache. I am sure Dobbs wasn't in the equation for this kids choice. Dobbs wont be there next year and Guarantano, who seems to be a great high school passer, will most likely take the reigns. Who wants a 5 star, who could be uncoachable, may lack work ethic, because he knows he is great. That has BUST written all over it. I would rather take a high 3 star or low 4 star who is coachable and wants to be at Tennessee. All this talk by the kid how much he was a fan of Tennessee means nothing. If he really loved Tennessee and wanted a challenge of playing in the SEC, he would have picked them, plain and simple. From what I have read by most, people are right, when Butch starts winning over his rivals, more people will take him seriously, including the 5 stars. Winning means everything in this business. Everything else is secondary. Want the elite recruits, start winning.

I don't even think it has anything to do with that. I think it all comes down to him wanting to play where Amari went. Just like Tyler byrd came here because of Aimes if I'm not mistaken.

Either way not that big of a deal to me, sometimes the 5* athelete is more of a diva than a football TEAMmate.

You need to check the stats for #3. In 2015, UT had 988 offensive plays, 371 were passes. That is 37.2% of the plays being passes which is no where close to 90%.

** Fixed a typo - it was 371 pass attempts not 317.

Comparison stats:

Clemson - 47.7% pass plays
Alabama - 40.9% pass plays
Oklahoma - 43.3% pass plays
Michigan State - 44.3% pass plays
Ohio State - 36.4% pass plays
LSU - 35.5%
Ole Miss - 51.3%
Miss St - 54%
Stanford - 34.3%

And a coach can only teach a WR how to catch the ball - they can't catch it for them.

Another interesting stat:

Dobbs - avg yard per completion 11.2
Watson - avg yard per completion 12.3

Very few, if any, of these schools are airing it out like you think - most are shorter yards with many of the yards, yards after completion.

The ONLY thing missing for UTK is players being drafted. THAT is what is putting us behind other teams using THAT against us in recruiting. Thanks again, Dools.

I didnt have a good feeling about Tee when Hunter Johnson made the flip to Clemson. I dont think much of Johnson's decommitment because I really like Emory Jones in the 18 class. Hopefully were still in a good spot with Jones. It is kinda aggervating though, knowing that Johnson was in Tees ear about Clemson while they were in Knoxville on a visit, if that story is true. Johnson and Rogers have really been a thorn in our side for this 17 class. Im just sick of hearing Tiger fans bragging about cherry picking our states best talent!!

It's good to see some have reached the acceptance stage. Others are still in denial and a lot are still hanging on to anger. Good luck as we all navigate the five stages of grief.

Our WRs and TEs will thrive this year with the RB core we have. We are so balanced it's scary to be a DC. Midway through the season many will be reevaluating their commitments to other programs...

CBJ will be picky at that point. If you are doubting his recruting ability, look at our past with him. When this season turns out to be close to expectations, we will make a big impact on NSD.

To win in the SEC you have to Run the ball, play great Defense, and have a serviceable Special Teams. We will be ok without Tee or ANY elite WR. It's a Team game.

Ok guys, after watching this Higgins mini meltdown for the past couple of days on here (which is ok by the way,we are fans and we get to vent our emotions and frustrations)I have just a few thoughts to add. First of all, recruiting has dipped a bit. Second of all, yes it sucks from a fan (and I would venture to say program) perspective that a five star wideout from East TN didn't choose to go to Tn. However, the kid has every right to choose where he wants to go to school,. He is not a traitor he just made his own decision as to what was best for him. I think it is time for us all to just move on. One five star does not a program make, and there are others out there still considering the Vols that warrant much more of our time and energy as fans moving forward. The wins WILL come this year, we WILL be contending for the SECCG year in and year out for the next decade at least. Butch has brought this program forward, overall recruited very well, and has shown humility by bringing in great minds as coordinators instead of clinging onto friendships to the detriment of the program. Recruiting will pick back up as soon as we pick up the wins next year. The recruiting dip of which Higgins is a part seems to me to be just a part of the natural ebb and flow of the FORWARD movement of the program.

So... don't burn the mattresses or run Butch out of town on a rail? Well this is gonna take some serious revamping of our plans to pull off this 180 you are suggesting. Somebody bring me a fire extinguisher, a 24 pack of crayons or colored pencils, and some construction paper! We've got some work to do.

p.s. I agree.

Butch has not had a solid Sec caliber pass blocking offensive line or any depth at QB during his tenure so we honestly have no idea what his ideal passing game plan at UT will be. Hope we find out this year. It's win the sec East time at minimum. No more excuses!!
