I heard a long time ago that if they had a large enough earthquake near Memphis that it would most likely cause Mud Island to collapse into the Mississippi and could even cause the Mississippi to temporarily flow backwards. It happened in 1812.

Yeah, basically it will be like the apocalypse over here. The soil is also made up of sedimentary rocks and clay, which from what I was taught basically means the ground will act wave-like during a major quake.

I do remember some quakes up in Kingsport when I was a kid

East Tennessee is right on a fault line so of course there is earthquakes almost every day due to plates shifting

It would be the borderline worst natural disaster in recent US history. Memphis is not ready for it.

The Mississippi River splits the country as is. Add a huge quake on top of that which would expand the width of the river and drown many metro areas. Memphis and St Louis are in the quake zone, then New Orleans and Baton Rouge gathering all the crap down river. An 8.0+ New Madrid quake would be the worst thing that could ever happen to the US. Hurricane Katrina would look like a drop in the bucket after that.
