Yup, very nice. Hopefully, we can get Zito(though likely a Met). We need to land a big time starter though. Let's fill in the holes:

None of this really matters. Atlanta is getting Peavy and most likely Glavine. Atlanta will end up being the team to beat in the NL this season.<--That really pains me to say.

Mets will have something to say about that, as will the Cards.
I have a feeling that most of the Cards players will be going their seperate ways after winning the Series. Also, I would give the edge to the Braves over the Mets, if the Braves have Peavy and Glavine on their pitching staff.

I'm a huge Cubs homer, and while Soriano will certainly help the team score runs, he's one of the most overrated players in the league.

Yes, but he is also a 30/30/100/.300 type player. He is pretty balanced, though his defense needs help. He was one of the biggest guys on the market so, even though we overspent, we overspent for talent.

Cubs still suck... I have to listen to EVERYONE around here whine about the Cubs... It's pointless, Soriano or not, root for a better team. Now. Before you get sucked in like everyone here in IL/IA.

Decent pick up guys, but the Cubbies still got a long way to go before we can even utter the word "postseason."

Word is that Carlos Lee is waiting to see what the Cubs offer.

1B-Derek Lee
2B-?/Alphonso Soriano
SS-Ronny Cedeno
3B-Aramis Ramirez
LF-Carlos Lee
CF-Alphonso Soriano/?
RF-Jacques Jones
C-Michael Barrett

His defense, as you said, is awful. His OBP is terrrrrrible and he doesn't see enough pitches per AB. Still, he'll provide precious slugging for our Cubbies.

He led all fielders in assist this year and he actually played a pretty decent D this year. Check it.
The league leaders in outfield assists are often bad outfielders. They end up with a lot of assists because teams are always running on them, hence, more chances to throw somebody out. Teams don't attempt to take the extra base against quality outfielders.

It depends where the Cubs put him. He's more of a liability at 2nd than in LF.

For instance, in 2006, these guys did this:

Jeff Kent saved his team 11 runs at 2B.
Marcus Giles saved his team 6.
Orlando Hudson saved his team 19.
Robinson Cano saved his team 15.

In 2005, the last time Soriano played 2B, he COST his team 21 runs. That's 2 wins he cost his team, and a 4 win differential from Hudson.

Question is can any of these guys pitch?? Until they land a few good starters they won't be a threat.

Probably not. It doesn't seem like we are going after any stud pitchers via free agency. We are looking at Ted Lilly and Gil Meche. We are looking at a Japanese pitcher(not Matsuzaka). We might go after some pitching help through trade though. Right now we are almost all ?s at pitcher. Word is that Soriano was signed for CF, not LF. That is why we are still pursuing Lee for LF. Cedeno won't be the SS unless he steps up because Izturis will take that job. He may play at 2nd though. Either way, it would be nice to land a potential starting MI and/or OF to go along with a &*%@load of pitching.

Jason Schmidt and Barry Zito are both still out there.

the thing is, the pitching doesn't have to be great. it's not like they need a rotation of 5 CY winners to compete. the NL is weak, and the NL Central is REALLY weak. all they need to do is get to the playoffs. anything from there on out is a crapshoot.

just ask the Tigers.

Zito will be a Met and I don't know if we are actively pursuing Schmidt. Like I said, right now, we are going after Lilly, Meche, and Marquis. We are also fiddling with a trade for Jake Westbrook(Matt Murton, prospects, etc).
