You can't spell Citrus without UT

Huh, what am I missing here? Who is "the HBC?" Why didn't they say "Spurrier?"
My favorite source says that Spurrier-led teams played in two Citrus Bowls after 1996, the 1997 Gators and the 1999 Gators.

Surely they didn't get it wrong, so what am I missing? Someone want to help me with the history?
Spurrier said that about Tennessee when he was coaching at Florida. Basically, Citrus Bowl always took the runner up in the SEC east.

Steve Superior... (In his own mind, at least.)
Years ago, I worked with a guy whose pronunciation of Spurrier sounded like that...

I hated the HBC back then because he would always beat UT and then brag about it. But now, nothing but respect to a great player and coach.

don't think that would ever happen after UT passed him over before he ended up a gator in his playing days...he despised UT (at least that's what I've heard)
UT didn't pass on him. they were still running the single wing at the time and he wanted to play a true quarterback. So it was really him passing on Tennessee.

The original nickname was the "Ol' Ball Coach", but because of his massive ego he insisted it should be 'Head Ball Coach', which sounds silly.
Thanks for posting…that’s how I remembered the progression of the nickname as well. But, I have heard sports personalities say HBC so often, I was beginning to doubt my memory.

UT was one of the last teams to move away from the single wing I think.

After the bias with Alabama getting in the CFB, I can't blame the Iowa fan for accusing them of favoritism but definitely the Iowa fan didn't get the joke/reference. Kudos to the Citrus Bowl Twitter account for the joke though, that is funny. Also the reference about Spurrier appearing more makes it even better.

Funny that his best South Carolina teams couldn’t beat Butch Jones.
And to add to the humiliation, Spurrier quit on the eve of the Tennessee game, JUST BECAUSE he couldn't stomach a loss to the VOLS. In hindsight, I though he did the South Carolina team dirty, because "he quit on them before they quit on him". Does that make sense? Merry Christmas. (Just got back from a Christmas office party... hoping this post was about Spurrier, if not, I apologize.)

I honestly thought it was Ol Bawl Coach because he would send video tapes of missed penalties in to the SEC office among anguished facial expressions when things were not going his way. I really don’t know what started first.

Most of you know where that comes from. Funnily enough, they posted that on their Twitter/X account and an Iowa fan thought they were favoring us 🤣

Steve Spurrier was probably pissed that Tennessee did not try to recruit him harder at Science Hill High School back in the 60's and he just enjoyed needling Tennessee.
