Within the Chancellor's comments, which points to a home run hire:

"I know that winning championships and competing at the highest level lifts the national profile of the University of Tennessee," Cheek said. "As chancellor, I am committed to winning both on the field and in the classroom.

Reinvested funds have Tennessee ready for key hiring

What if Cheek and Hart both feel Kirby Smart is the guy to step in and win here? Nowhere in that statement does it mention anything about hiring the new highest paid coach in college football. Your trying to read into things that are just not there. Your reaching and grasping in hope. I understand.

I think that announcement was that the athletic department would not give its annual contribution to the university which is usually $6-10 million per year. It looks like the university will be receiving unexpected financial gifts from boosters to cover that amount. I would suspect that there are tax benefits of giving to the university versus the athletic department for these people. The net result is the same for everyone.

Actually 18 million over 3 years to hire someone OTHER than Gruden would make sense. Dooley and staff buyouts would eat up about 9 million of that over the 3 year period. Exactly how much do you think a new HC and staff would cost if it were an Al Golden type hire? Maybe another 18 million over the next 3 years. That's 27 million dollars by going with a budget hire option.

Not saying Gruden won't be hired, but just because 18 million is going back to the AD over the next 3 years proves nothing.

We also have the haslams...maybe they pay for buyouts and the 18 mil goes to charles lee ray

Completely agree, but Strong is my second choice behind Gruden. Third is Patterson.

Never know. These "boosters" have been talked about alot on here. Fans seem to think they are waiting and eager to pay all buyouts and millions for new coaches. Funny thing is not a one stepped up to pay any of the buyouts over the last 3-4 years. Maybe they were asleep? Someone wake them up!!

Exactly. High powered attorneys and accountants advising our athletics department benefactors (i.e. boosters) how best to structure their contributions.

You may very well be right, but in moments of philosophical crises like these, I think, "What did Bama do?" The anxiety over our boosters may be answered in this question.

Yea, no doubt. He has to be offered what can be done, and then it is out of your hands. He is the number one target- he would have to turn down a lot of money.

Hart said a proven head coach. Kirby Smart isn't one.

An Arkansas sports show mentioned during the 4 o'clock hour (CST) that Tennessee received an offer from Petrino on the table for 4 million and Tennessee decided to go another direction. Any truth to it?

The only kinda coach that would dare take on this fan base and recent failure is a coach that is %100 sure he can turn this program around and woop sone a$$ . A Gruden or a stoops would have that kinda confidents not no smart or strong. They just dont have enough experince to think for sure they could compete with fla ga sc bama & vandy.(lol) but true. We need a REAL Head coach proven winner) not a (maybe they can coach @ a high level). We need a Saban.c.kelly.meyer.B.kelly.only none of these guys are comming so we need the Man. Gruden. the guy knows how to coach regaurdless if its College. And im 92% sure he will be our coach. we have surley suffered ling enough. We will be competeing with our rivals sooner than u guys know. Go Volz

Sorry if this a rehash, but It's hard for me to believe Cheek would make this announcement without a firm guarantee of who he's getting.

During my time as a student, I worked in several academic departments at UT from 08 thru 11,and just about every tenured professor that I worked with had some type of gripe with Cheek. This is no secret.

To make a very public announcement that pretty much thumbs his nose at them would be the last nail in his coffin unless...

He had a guy that's guaranteed to earn universal acclaim from integral alumni.

Cheek's no genius, but he's an excellent politician. No way he sticks his neck out like this unless he has a real idea what's to come.

Paying to put your name on the side of a building is very different than paying the buyout/hire of a coach.
